GI Amyloidosis ... Dr. Melissa Hershman, assistant professor from the OHSU Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, provides an informative overview of how, and where, amyloidosis can present in the G.I. tract. She reviews patient symptoms, many of which are nonspecific and can be associated with other more common issues, delaying diagnosis. Dr. Hershman goes through how G.I. amyloidosis is tested for, where in the G.I. tract biopsies are most commonly performed, and how the tissue is stained for diagnosis by pathology. In closing, she reviews the array of treatments available to assist patients. https://lnkd.in/e-32JJ-P

Making a difference in the fight against Amyloidosis.
About us
Mackenzie’s Mission is focused on making a difference in the fight against amyloidosis. Three areas anchor our work - closing the educational gap in the medical community through the Amyloidosis Speakers Bureau (ASB); empowering patients and caregivers through our resource library and education hub; and supporting multiple world class institutions who conduct research and run clinical trials on amyloidosis. Research publication regarding the Amyloidosis Speakers Bureau: PubMed https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37753389/ Founded by Mackenzie Boedicker in 2017 following her diagnosis at age 23 with AL amyloidosis.

Cardiologist and researcher | Cardiac imaging | Amyloidosis | Data analysis | Brigham and Women's Hospital
Cardiac imaging for amyloidosis is typically focused on the left ventricle. But what happens in the right ventricle? In an article published a few months ago with Yesh Datar and the amyloidosis imaging group led by Sharmila Dorbala at Brigham and Women's Hospital, we used 18F-florbetapir PET/CT, cardiac MRI and echocardiography to analyze right ventricular (RV) involvement in systemic light-chain (AL) amyloidosis. - Can we detect RV amyloid deposits in patient with and without criteria for AL cardiomyopathy? - Is RV amyloid burden associated with RV function metrics? - Is RV dysfunction better explained by RV amyloid burden, or by pulmonary hypertension from left ventricular amyloid or from lung amyloid? - Is RV amyloid burden associated with adverse outcomes in AL amyloidosis? All the answers are in the publication in EHJ Cardiovascular Imaging: https://lnkd.in/dG235gha Many thanks to all the other coauthors: Sarah Cuddy, Sirwoo K., Alexandra Taylor, Jocelyn Canseco Neri, Dominik C. https://lnkd.in/ejY7qTjQ Lack of awareness, a gap in medical education, is among the most critical and urgent challenges facing the amyloidosis community today. Raising awareness to accelerate diagnosis, coupled with available FDA-approved treatments, leads to a significant improvement in patient lives. Please watch and re-share to spread the word. #amyloidosis

Hereditary Amyloidosis: The V122I Variant Despite the evidence that a meaningful 3-4% of the US Black population of West African ancestry likely carries the V122I genetic mutation, hereditary TTR amyloidosis remains significantly underdiagnosed and undertreated in this population. Amyloidosis can be devastating to both patients and their families. Increased awareness of the disease, availability of testing, and FDA-approved therapies are slowly beginning to shift this dynamic. However, there is still much work to be done to close the gap between diagnosed cases and the population estimated to be affected. https://lnkd.in/gb_FPwwM
