Cleaning up the Commonwealth for 25 years
About us
The LSP Association (LSPA) is the non-profit association, founded in 1993, for Licensed Site Professionals (“LSPs”) and related practitioners. LSPs are the scientists, engineers, and public health specialists licensed by the Commonwealth to work on behalf of property owners, operators, and other involved parties to oversee the assessment and cleanup of oil and hazardous materials released to the environment. These sites include multi-acre urban brownfields, roadside spills, “mom and pop” gas stations and dry cleaners, and everything in between. Our 800 members are LSPs and other consultants who work with institutional, non-profit, government, and private clients to remediate contaminated sites so these properties can be placed back into active and productive use. LSPs have brought over 40,000 contaminated properties into regulatory compliance since 1993. The LSPA's mission is to support our membership in achieving and maintaining a high standard of practice in the assessment and remediation of sites in Massachusetts contaminated with oil and/or hazardous materials. The LSPA provides technical, informational, educational, and communications resources to our membership, from early career professionals to experienced Licensed Site Professionals (LSPs). The LSPA also serves as an advocate in communicating with MassDEP, the LSP Board of Registration, and the state legislature, and as a resource to the general public.

Important questions and comments. The LSPA is actively discussing what we can do to increase awareness of what LSPs do, what it’s like to work in this field, and access to licensure.
This question has been on my mind for a couple months. About 5 years ago, there were about 550 Licensed Site Professionals (LSPs) accredited by the Commonwealth of MA.* As of late April 2024, there were only about 420 LSPs, or a drop of about 20%, and some of the 420 work for state agencies (myself included), municipalities, or in other non-consulting positions. There's a big generational turnover of late, as many of the people licensed in the early 1990s retire, and the field does seem to have some demographic skew in it due to the numbers of people (in roughly my age cohort) who left the field during the 2008-2010 recession, and again during COVID, who would otherwise have been in mid or senior level positions by now, and possibly licensed. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a crisis, but the decline in numbers is worrying (and also probably seriously stressing out people trying to recruit or train new LSPs to keep their practices going). This is why I get 2-3 cold calls from recruiters every month. Are consulting companies doing enough to encourage their mid-level people to pursue professional licenses? Or, has the idea of licensure become less attractive, and why? Also, have other related fields seen similar trends for PE, PG, CIH, or architect licenses? *The #LSP license is issued by the Commonwealth of #Massachusetts to environmental professionals who have qualified by education, experience, and a (very rigorous) written examination. In MA's semi-privatized site cleanup program LSPs are required for oversight and management of assessment and remediation projects regulated under MGL 21E and the Massachusetts Contingency Plan. In terms of 'magnitude' of the credential, it's about on par with a PE, CIH or architect. #LSPA #massDEP #environmental #remediation #environmentalconsulting #humanresources #recruitment
