Just released, check out the Longevity Acceleration Podcast Episode 003: https://lnkd.in/e84dKujw In this interview, we delve into the replacement strategy for aging with professor Jean Hebert of the Einstein School of Medicine. Jean is a pioneer of a radical new approach to not just to delay but potentially reverse aging and disease through the gradual replacement of old body parts with young lab-grown replacements, with a primary focus on the brain. While most of the field is attempting complex interventions to repair or prevent aging damage, after decades of R&D we still lack a consensus understanding of aging & have zero therapies to treat it - this highlights the importance of alternative approaches such as Jean’s! The conversation also covers issues of policy, resource allocation, attracting talent, and the history of Jean’s work and how he came to focus on the replacement strategy. Is there a credible plan to solve aging in our lifetimes? A plausible series of steps from where we are today, to a post-aging future? We looked, but we couldn’t find one. So we decided to build one. There is little coordination or rational distribution of resources, critical path work is chronically underfunded. The lack of a coherent plan is slowing progress. What differentiates our plan to solve aging? Depth: Informed by a survey of 400 industry pros, & dozens of 1:1 expert interviews. Exclusive: Focus on indefinite life extension. While the longevity biotech field has made exciting recent advances, there are foundational issues that retard progress globally. These issues are often systemic and severe, but receive little attention and have never been mapped. Over 1.5 years and 500 hrs of work, the LBF surveyed 400 professionals in longevity biotech and established a first-of-a-kind taxonomy of the bottlenecks and most demanded solutions. See the resulting report, paper, interactive graph and raw data are here: https://lnkd.in/gzxaDkRU Highlights: the most severe bottlenecks are: 1) validated aging biomarkers; 2) general lack of funding and 3) lack of good aging models. Interestingly, the top demanded solution was more public aging biology datasets. Taken together, these answers revealed a throughline of a deep need for a new 21st century data-first model of doing science. Progress towards solving aging can be massively accelerated. But for that, these bottlenecks need to be solved.
