On July 26th, 1990, the American with Disabilities Act was signed into law. The ADA was created to address the discrimination and barriers disabled persons experience and has since helped many Americans access the support they need. However, there is still room to improve and make the world an accessibility friendly place, which starts with talking with disabled persons about what would help them!

Marginalized groups, including women and BIPOC, face many obstacles when trying to access mental health care, such as a lack of health insurance and stigma. By starting conversations to discuss these issues and allow people to speak about their experiences, we can create more accepting and welcoming spaces. You can learn more by reading “Black Fatigue: How Racism Erodes the Mind, Body, and Spirit” by Mary-Frances Winters or “The Pain We Carry” by Natalie Y. Gutiérrez.

Non-binary is the umbrella term for people whose gender identity does not fit the binary of “man” or “woman.” All non-binary people express their gender differently, and one way to be a good ally to them is to use gender neutral language whenever possible and to avoid making assumptions about others’ gender identity. You can also check out “They/Them/Their” by Eris Young and “Gender Diversity and Non-Binary Inclusion in the Workplace” by Sarah Gibson.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States and recognizes the need for continuous efforts toward equality. Since the holiday was first celebrated, improvements have been made, but much more work remains. Let’s all take a moment to remember the many who fought for their freedom and amplify the voices for freedom that deserve to be heard today.

Today, we’d like to celebrate autistic people and highlight the importance of neurodiversity. Autistic Pride Day was first celebrated in 2005 by the group Aspies for Freedom. The day focuses on raising awareness for self-affirmation, the autism rights and acceptance movement, and the neurodiversity paradigm. Autistic Pride Day also promotes shifting viewing autism from a “disease” to a “difference,” focusing on normalizing many autistic experiences.

Every year, we celebrate the diversity of love, self-expression, and feeling comfortable in one’s skin. We also celebrate and amplify the voices of the LGBTQ community to highlight their commitment to fighting for equality in and out of the workplace. Normalizing the practice of asking someone’s preferred name and pronouns is one of the easiest, most respectful ways you can be a great ally year-round!
