One Chicago family’s legacy is the vegan, soul food restaurant Soul Veg City, owned by Lori Seay. It was founded by her father more than 40 years ago to serve delicious, healthy food to residents on the South Side of #Chicago. Seay and her brother, Arel, have been running the business for a decade, serving smoothies, ‘Zesty Cauliflower Wingz’ and a rotating menu of creative dishes, eager to serve the community while remaining competitive in the current economy. “Many black businesses don’t survive the second generation,” shared Seay. “But the dedication my dad had, he put that in us. We had to learn everything from scratch: the taxes, licensing. Nothing came easy.” With support from Greater Chatham Initiative, a business development organization supported by LISC and the #KrogerFoundation, Seay is finding the connections and expert advice she needs to grow her business, which recently expanded to a second location. Over the past year, Seay has accessed GCI resources on menu design, employee retention, marketing, and social media. “We’ve done everything we could to expand our growth and the opportunities are there to keep growing,” said Seay. “Soul Veg City won’t end with the next generation.” LISC Chicago

This is great news for Ember Charter Schools! With support from a #LISCLending construction loan, the renovated facility will allow the school to enroll and educate an additional 250 students. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dkk4QwHH
We are happy to announce that we have closed a $4.5M construction loan to Ember Charter Schools to renovate a former warehouse into a new facility for their high school. This deal allows us to partner with a charter school that is fully aligned with the LISC Charter School Financing Team’s racial equity ideals and our mission of increasing access to high-quality public schools as essential part of community development. We are thrilled to partner with a school that has such dynamic leader, in Rafiq Kalam Id-Din II Esq., with a demonstrated commitment to racial equity. Ember’s mission is to ensure that the young people they educate will emerge into adulthood as whole and healthy people, prepared to engage in deep and thoughtful analysis about our country and world’s biggest challenges. This approach allows students to heal and thrive despite their exposure to the deeply debilitating trauma of persistent and pervasive poverty, racism, and marginalization. As intended, Ember’s students have thrived, in 2022, 100% of graduating students received admissions to four-year colleges and 100% of students were offered academic merit scholarships. https://lnkd.in/emxFTvcc

Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) reposted this
Early childcare educators and caregivers are critical to a strong economy and a full and productive workforce. Supporting the #childcare sector—providers, workers, and facilities—is a business imperative. I am grateful to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago team for listening to businesses and communities and highlighting the importance of the childcare sector. Special thanks to Fed Board Governor Michelle Bowman and Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee for their insights and thoughtful participation in the discussion. Joan Blough, Rob Grunewald, Suchi S., and many others who participated the other day—let’s continue to invest in the childcare economy, test innovative solutions, and build a better system to support early learning and childcare. Bevin Parker-Cerkez, Nicole Barcliff, and other colleagues at Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and our community partners—gratitude for your leadership and tireless commitment to the childcare sector!
