Not all #GenAI tools are engineered equal. While the unparallelled momentum behind GenAI is largely due to it being a general purpose technology that builds upon prior, compounding technological supercycles, many applications of GenAI need to be engineered to be fit-for-purpose. This is especially true in complex domains like legal. The video below explains why. As shown in the video, Macro outperforms Adobe on in-document chat despite using the same LLM to ask the same questions of the same contract. The difference lies in all the complementary engineering Macro has done to make complex documents more navigable—the background graphing that turns every defined term and cross-reference into a clickable hyperlink. The legal pro's first call to innovate. Greasing the gears of commerce in legal operations and practice.
About us
What's LexFusion: A collaborative circle of hand-picked, truly-excellent legal innovation companies. These companies represent most of the mature categories of innovation. They can make you a better lawyer, lower your costs and/or increase your profits today. Tomorrow, together, they will continue to redefine the practice of law. What's LexFusion's Purpose? To grease the gears of commerce in the legal industry. To rapidly accelerate the adoption of legal innovation through trust, community, and market fit. We would like to drive a stake into the heart of the "army of cold callers" paradigm. Why now? There is a "Cambrian explosion" of legal innovation companies. Many are providing real value, and are succeeding in raising venture capital. However, many struggle to get those ideas to market. Biglaw Partners, general counsel, and legal operations leaders are inundated with cold calls, emails and an endless parade of new ideas. While these legal professionals need to innovate, this process obscures rather than illuminates the market. Often, these buyers they throw their hands up, cry "mercy" instead of face the onslaught of new things. This benefits no one, and has to change. For Corporate Counsel & Law Firms: LexFusion would like TWO HOURS A YEAR of your time each calendar year (minus cocktail time) to walk you through the state of the legal innovation market. We promise you will walk away understand the leading solutions which can cut costs, improve outcomes and increase budgeting transparency TODAY. We also want to help you see around the corner to the practice of tomorrow. For Legal Innovation / Technology Companies: LexFusion wants to know you. Set up time for us to understand and map where you fit into this ecosystem. Maybe, you should join our community someday, but maybe today you need financing or advisory support. We want to help, and to make sure you're not burning your capital on ineffective and intrusive marketing tactics which don't work.

#LexFusionGuide The missing-feature fallacy is a hallmark of legal tech sales fails. Instead of saying, “we are not interested right now,” potential buyers demur by identifying an absent feature as their barrier to purchase. New founders often run off to build this sale-critical enhancement only to learn it was not in fact dispositive. While many buyers go to great lengths to avoid saying “no” outright, no remains the answer. Buyers are being nice, instead of kind. The missing-feature fallacy has become prominent in many discussions around GenAI. While the legal industry has moved at unprecedented speed, for us (it is all relative), much of the adoption resistance is grounded in what the tools can’t do yet. This game, of course, is endless. There is always one more thing the tool might do—until the machine achieves precognition while also being able to pick up my dry cleaning. And, even then, the everything-tool must be completely intuitive, with zero learning curve, implementation dip, or deviation from existing ways of working. #LexFusionGuide GenAI is moving fast. We inherently struggle to maintain perspective on just how fast. Expectations enjoy a permanent lead on execution. Unmet expectations are a recipe for disappointment. Disappointment can color our view on the pace of progress. Sometimes, it is worth stepping back. This AI is the worst we will ever have. Yet what we currently deem disappointing seemed far-fetched less than two years ago. For some perspective, the video below demonstrates the rapid evolution of AI image generators—using the prompt, “lawyers scared of robots taking their jobs.” For more progress, promise, pain, and peril read LexFusion’s latest snapshot synthesizing our present perspective on GenAI in Legal: https://lnkd.in/gxrBXyyB With - Joe B. | D. #LexFusionGuide: Now that LLMs exist, an LLM is the easiest part of an LLM-enabled application. Because the LLM part is relatively easy, we’ve had a Tribble-like explosion of “thin-wrapper” applications where, in essence, the product is merely another access point, a simple overlay, to a commercially available LLM like GPT-4. These products introduce features native to LLMs can already do (summarize, translate, chat). But the thin wrappers are mostly a fancy UI, implying added value but, in reality, delivering limited impact. Even with LLMs, it is not easy to produce Easy Buttons, and, as LexFusion predicted, there has been an avalanche of garbage products. But the application layer is maturing quickly. Thick-wrapper applications, with the complementary engineering that makes them fit for purpose, are starting to enter the arena. In theory, GenAI could be pure hype. Hype can exist in a vacuum—i.e., without any underlying substance. That is, we can experience hype with no underpinning inflection. The inverse is not true. We never enjoy genuine inflection points sans hype. No matter how legitimate the leap forward, there will be all manner of wild-eyed predictions that seem silly, or pompously premature, in retrospect. This dynamic is, for lack of a better word, annoying. But righteous frustration does not obviate the import of the core advancement. LexFusion persists in our position that GenAI cannot be dismissed as mere hype. Progress. Promise. Pain. Peril.
