Did y'all know that National School Bus safety week starts today? Transportation is a legacy industry, one that Detroit had a HUGE hand in building. Busing children is even older than motorized vehicles, believe it or not, the first school buses were pulled by horses! For schools, transportation takes up a SIGNIFICANT part of their budget. Over the years it's become one of the most outsourced services that schools provide. With outsourcing comes cost cutting and the potential for bad things to happen. Every year, there are dozens of stories nationwide about children being left alone inside of school buses, dropped off to the wrong stop, left waiting for the bus, and sadly, being injured and even killed while entering or exiting a school bus. As a school bus driver with thousands of field trips under my belt, TENS of thousands of hours spent on buses and 2 million commercial miles driven, it's safe to say I've seen a LOT of things that need improvements, a second set of eyes and tech to solve them. The average age of a school bus on the road in America is NINETEEN years! With such little direct oversight of the companies that are transporting our progeny, this week is the perfect time to talk about what's happening, why and how we can solve for it using technology.
