Enlisting military veterans and Americans of all backgrounds to serve and lead in the places they call home.

About us

Lead For America is a national service organization that enlists military veterans and Americans of all backgrounds to serve and lead in the communities they call home. Since its founding in 2018, Lead For America has created more than 400 full-time public service Fellowships in 44 states. Lead For America has two flagship programs: the National Veterans Fellowship, and the American Connection Corps. Launching in the summer of 2024, the Lead For America Veterans Fellowship will support 50 Veterans each year in making the transition from the military into leadership positions back home. Each veteran will be provided a $100,000 stipend, spend the summer in Washington D.C. working with their Senator or Member of Congress, and then return to their home state, where they will work directly alongside the Governor, a Mayor, or a CEO for one year. Military veterans have already demonstrated their commitment to service, sacrifice, and personal courage. The Veterans Fellowship provides them an opportunity to bring that ethos of service to leadership positions in our communities across the nation. The American Connection Corps is the nation's premier AmeriCorps service program focused on advancing economic prosperity in rural and emerging communities. Through a one-year paid service placement with a local government agency or nonprofit, ACC helps exceptional people launch their careers and fulfill what's possible in the places where success is too often defined as “leaving and never coming back.” ACC alumni form a bench of local leaders who can bridge divides and spark needed change in the places they call home, ensuring that every corner of America has the great public servants it deserves.

It seems fitting on the 4th of July to shine a light on an incredible challenge that our CEO has taken on this summer: Joe Nail has challenged himself on a cross-country journey, running a marathon distance in each of the 50 states as part of Project 1310. He is running 1,310 miles and completing 50,000 push-ups to raise funding and awareness for Lead For America's new National Veterans Fellowship program, launching later this summer. Joe is sharing recaps of each of his marathons in every state on his personal social media, and we are documenting those on a blog on our website so you can follow along! Take a look at his latest recap at the WWI Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gSKfEF9q Learn more about #Project1310 at https://www.joenail.run/ and make sure you follow us on social media to stay up to date when Joe runs his tribute marathon in your home state! 🇺🇸

Exciting News from Project 1310, a remarkable initiative spearheaded by the incredible Joe Nail, dedicated to supporting veterans and benefiting Lead For America's Veterans Fellowship program. Joe has embarked on an inspiring journey across the country, running a marathon distance in each of the 50 states as part of Project 1310 🔗joenail.run. He is running 1,310 miles and completing 50,000 push ups to raise funding and awareness for @Lead For America's new National Veterans Fellowship 🔗www.LeadForAmerica/Veterans program, launching this summer. In support of Project 1310, Joe has launched the One Mile Challenge. Inspired by the Ice Bucket Challenge, participants are invited to take part in a one-mile fitness challenge dedicated to honoring a veteran or service member they admire. I invite each of you to take part in Joe's journey by participating in the One Mile Challenge. It's simple yet impactful: The challenge is as follows: complete 20 push ups, walk or run a mile, and finish with 20 push ups. 20 push ups to remember the 20 veterans who die from suicide every day. 2 sets, to honor those who have served, and those still serving today. 1 mile to symbolize the challenging journey transitioning from military to civilian life. After completing the challenge, record a video and share it on social media, then nominate three others to join in and continue the movement. Tag @JoeNailKS and Project1310 and visit 🔗JoeNail.run to track his progress. To help visualize Joe's journey, I am sharing this map of his incredible journey across the US. I encourage you to take the One Mile Challenge and/or join Joe for a mile when he's in your area. In addition, kindly share the map on your social media platforms, spreading the word about Project 1310. Joe's commitment to this cause is truly inspiring, and his efforts resonate deeply with our community. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. Project 1310 is officially benefitting the Lead For America Veterans Fellowship program. #Project1310 #OneMileChallenge #Veterans #Inspiration #CommunitySupport #LeadForAmerica

Student at University of California, Santa Barbara

I am thrilled to announce that I have recently graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. My time at UCSB has been transformative, and I'm grateful for the experiences and knowledge I've gained. During my time at UCSB, I had the wonderful opportunity to work for Island View Outfitters, and was an active member of Pi Beta Phi, CA ZETA, for four years! I will forever cherish my years in Isla Vista, as they have shaped me into the person I am today. I am also excited to share that I have officially joined the American Connection Corps (ACC), a program of Lead For America, as an AmeriCorps Member! I want to thank Cadie Bergan for believing in me as well as Jack Forinash and Tara Saylor for the opportunity to work with the Blue Sky Center team! In the coming year, I'll serve at Blue Sky Center, a non-profit in New Cuyama, CA. My focus will be on increasing access to broadband, as well as enhancing economic development throughout the Cuyama Valley. I am so excited to make a positive impact in the community by immersing myself in rural living and engaging with the residents to understand their needs better. At ACC, we are dedicated to bridging the digital divide in rural communities and emerging cities, and I'm proud to be a part of this mission. Together, we will work towards creating a more connected and prosperous future for everyone.

🌻 Hey #Kansans! We're excited to launch our newest initiative, "Speak from the Heart." This project amplifies the voices of communities whose stories often overlook their strengths and assets. In Wichita's zipcode of 67214, stories are often told about its residents, overshadowing their hopes. We believe there's more. At Open Streets ICT—17th Street, we invited those attending to share what they love about this community. Listen to their heartfelt voices and feel the love and aspirations for 67214. What did you learn? How can you better understand your community? And Kansans, where should we take Speak From The Heart next? Let us know! #SpeakFromTheHeart #StartWhereYouLive #TellTheStories #CivicBench #EveryCommunityHasValue
