The Los Angeles Zoo hosted its annual Migrant Education Program 'Family Day' event today, featuring artwork and presentations by 45 students from across Los Angeles. For the last several weeks, students met with Zoo animal care staff to learn more about the Peninsular pronghorn, southern mountain yellow-legged frog, California desert tortoise, and California condor and the conservation efforts the Zoo supports for these species. MEP students presented to their families, friends, and Zoo guests the knowledge they learned throughout their term here. More information on the event can be found at: https://bit.ly/3zUU5H0.

The L.A. Zoo is thrilled to announce a new exhibit at Los Angeles World Airports's Tom Bradley International Terminal as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums's Wildlife Trafficking Alliance (WTA) campaign, "I Travel for Wildlife." The campaign aims at eliminating the trade of illegal wildlife and wildlife products that contribute to the decrease of wildlife populations across the world. The exhibit features authentic contraband confiscated and donated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife -- all items are commonly available to travelers overseas, such as jewelry, accessories, purses, and decorative items. Each example serves as a sobering reminder of the toll exacted by the illegal wildlife trade on endangered species and ecosystems. Travelers will leave this exhibit more informed so they can buy informed when abroad. More information can be found at https://lnkd.in/gU3buiYT.

Exciting conservation news just in time for #WorldOtterDay! 🦦 Rosario, an eight-year-old female giant otter born at the L.A. Zoo, has moved to Argentina to join a breeding program designed to reintroduce this species back into a region where it has gone extinct. This partnership and reintroduction program, led by Rewilding Argentina, marks the *FIRST TIME* a giant otter from an Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoo is being sent to directly contribute to conservation efforts. Rosario's offspring will be candidates for release into Iberá National Park. “Reintroduction programs, such as Rewilding Argentina's, are valuable because they can revive extinct populations within historic habitat,” said Candace Sclimenti, Curator of Mammals, and AZA’s giant otter program leader. “The L.A. Zoo has a long history of providing care, wellbeing, and husbandry for giant otters, and I am excited that Rosario is helping to ensure the return of her species to Argentina.” Read more at: https://lnkd.in/ghWWa4pE

This state icon is an example of the beautiful and unique native Californian wildlife that can too easily be lost. To commemorate this anniversary, institutions from around the state are coming together to declare 2024 the year to "Coexist with Wildlife, California.” Stay tuned for events, activities, and information this summer highlighting threatened native Californian species, and to learn what you can do to #CoexistWithWildlifeCalifornia. https://lnkd.in/gehzQQet

Since 2022, the #LAZoo has been participating in a monthly habitat restoration inside #GriffithPark at the Fern Dell West Trail. Volunteers arrived on May 4th to pull invasive plants, such as mustard, castor bean, and hemlock. Removal of these invasive plants will help native plants advance and grow in these areas, allowing for safe and healthy habitats for pollinators and native wildlife. To find out how you can get involved with this #HabitatRestoration project, visit https://lnkd.in/gk-QniVw. More information on #ProjectPollinator can be found at https://lnkd.in/gUP5c8_G.
