More patients are seeing fees tacked on to their medical bills. These come when hospitals buy up outpatient facilities, rebrand them and then charge “facility fees” for routine tests and services. In the latest episode of "An Arm and a Leg," host Dan Weissmann talks with a retired speech pathologist from Oxford, Mississippi. Listen to her story and the lengths she went through to avoid an $8,000 fee: https://lnkd.in/gHe-NdkD

One of the biggest challenges to improving care for low-income older adults and folks with disabilities who are dual eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid is that the programs, policies, and delivery systems simply don’t talk to one another. So we are pleased to partner with @PennLDI & @Health_Affairs to bring together people who are dually eligible, providers, researchers, and policymakers to share their experiences and ideas for making care more patient-centered and affordable. I really do love interns - they give me hope for the future and remind me that the kids really are alright. This week, I’m particularly grateful for the Arnold Ventures summer interns who are leading service projects, including one for recently released justice-involved folks with professional wardrobes to help support employment. Y’all, policy change is long and hard, and too often SO distant from the people and communities we aim to benefit. I used to think it was either/or, and now I know it’s both/and. When I get proximate - whether through acts of service or building community and lived experience into my policy work - I learn. I see humans instead of just problems. I see assets alongside liabilities. And I am reminded how connected we all are.
