Premiering Fridays, September 27, October 4, and 11, VOCES “American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos.” In this three-part series, actor and playwright John Leguizamo travels throughout Mexico and the U.S. to shed light on both the known and lesser-known Latino stories. The Webby Award-winning PBS Short Film Festival has returned! The 2024 festival, themed “Story Time,” celebrates the art of short-form storytelling and will feature "El Paisa" by Daniel Eduvijes Carrera. Co-produced by Latino Public Broadcasting and written and directed by Daniel Eduvijes Carrera, “El Paisa” is a moving queer coming-of-age drama about Fernando, a gay, goth skater (Cristian Urbina). After a mysterious white-hatted vaquero (David Ty Reza) rescues him from a group of neighborhood toughs on the streets of East L.A., Fernando finds the courage to end a closeted relationship and discovers a newfound strength and connection to both his Mexican-American and his LGBTQ familias. “El Paisa” is the winner of numerous awards including the Jury Award for Best LGBTQ Short Film at the American Pavilion Emerging Filmmakers Showcase at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film’s original music was written, composed and produced by Ricky Garay and Silas Hite of Los Tigres del Acordeón. Produced by Miguel Angel Caballero. Now Streaming! “From Here/From There (“De Aquí/De Allá”)” tells the inspiring story of Luis Cortes Romero, the first undocumented attorney to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The film follows Luis – an immigration attorney as well as a DACA recipient – as he journeys from a difficult youth to the highest court in the land as part of a powerful legal team fighting the Administration’s attempt to rescind DACA. The new comedy-documentary series ROOTS OF COMEDY WITH JESUS TREJO, a co-production of PBS So Cal , Calico, and the National Multicultural Alliance, showcases six standup comedians from across the country and tells the stories behind the laughs. Part comedy, part social commentary, part travelogue, the series follows the host, Mexican-American comedian Jesus Trejo, as he embarks on an emotional odyssey and telling the “stories behind the laughs,” revealing how the most memorable comedy traces back to the roots of a community with themes that are central to the series. LPB interviewed Trejo about producing the series, comedy across the country, and humor’s role in bring us together.
