About us
Larta Institute is a nonprofit organization accelerating innovation & entrepreneurship. Our mission is to foster science & technology innovation for a sustainable planet. Our planet is experiencing significant global problems created by human behavior and policies affecting the environment, food, education, energy and healthcare systems. New science and technology plays a critical role in transforming how we sustainably feed, fuel and heal the world. LARTA was founded in 1993, funded by the State of California as a Los Angeles Regional Technology Alliance to stimulate the economic development of technology-based enterprises. Now known as Larta Institute, the organization quickly became the national partner for numerous federal government agencies — including DARPA, NIH, DOE, NSF, NIST, NOAA and USDA — to commercialize novel research and innovation. Today, our innovation platform and ecosystem accelerate new science and technology from idea to sustainable enterprise by providing a unique combination of connections, resources and funding. We have helped more than 4,500 startups, and our alumni have raised over $7 billion in funds. Together, let’s feed, fuel, and heal the world.

SPOTLIGHT ON SYMBROSIA 🌱 FOCUSING ON IMPACT: NATURE PRESERVATION & REPAIR At Larta Institute, we are convinced that combining science, technology, human ingenuity, and community effort can offer genuine solutions to our planet’s most pressing issues. Through our strategic impact focus on Nature Preservation and Repair, we are harnessing the power of our programs, ecosystems, and funding to reverse environmental damage and secure a sustainable planet for generations to come. Today, we spotlight Symbrosia , a company dedicated to solving climate change with the world’s mightiest seaweed. Symbrosia’s SeaGraze, made from the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis, helps to reduce methane expelled from livestock, a major contributor to climate change. The Hawaii-based company conducted the world’s first commercial trial of Asparagopsis in 2020 and saw a reduction of over 75% in methane produced by livestock. SeaGraze intercepts the formation of methane without impacting the fatty acids that are involved in the production of meat and milk. Founder Alexia Akbay shares, "When SeaGraze™ is implemented into the diet of ruminant livestock, which are beef, dairy cows, sheep, and goats, it can reduce their methane emissions by over 80%—that’s a big value proposition." 🏘️🌱 SPOTLIGHT ON LIFTWARE 🌱🏘️ FOCUSING ON SUSTAINABLE IMPACT: EQUITABLE, HEALTHY & RESILIENT COMMUNITIES At Larta, we believe that true resilience goes beyond mere recovery from emergencies and crises — it requires the creation of inclusive communities that foster well-being for all. This is why one of our key impact areas is focused on building equitable, healthy & resilient communities. Our approach is to incorporate elements of resilience into the daily lives of individuals, ensuring that the essentials — clean water, nutritious food, secure housing, reliable energy, accessible education, and comprehensive healthcare — are not just available, but equitably distributed. By supporting innovators who are developing solutions that can foster resilience, we aim to empower communities to not only withstand economic and climate shocks, but to thrive. Today, we spotlight Liftware, a company dedicated to helping people with limited mobility retain dignity, confidence, and independence. Liftware began with a simple idea – to assist individuals with hand tremors and limited hand and arm mobility. Founded in 2012 by Anupam Pathak, Liftware was inspired by the experiences of friends and family. This motivation led to the development of technologies aimed at improving quality of life and independence for those with tremors. The Liftware team joined Google Life Sciences in 2014, which later became Verily in 2015. Founder Anupam Pathak shares, "With our device, we allow the hand to move but what you’re holding onto cancels its motion. Digital cameras already do this on a small scale so we’ve come up with technology to do it on a larger scale."
