  • This weekend 26 teams (267 walkers) from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health did a pretty great thing at the American Heart Association Lancaster Heart Walk. We raised more than $17,000 to support research, education, and resources to help prevent and treat heart disease and stroke. Thanks to event co-chairs Dr. Danielle Cross and Matt Parido from LG Health, and all the community members and survivors who walked with us to save lives.❤️

  • Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health • Update 6d While there is no magic food or supplement that has consistently been found to prevent cancer, there is plenty of good news, according to Penn Medicine hematologist-oncology Dr. Elizabeth Horenkamp. The same healthy habits that help prevent other serious diseases like diabetes and heart disease, can also help lower your risk of developing many common cancers. Plus, at the same time, taking these actions may help you reach that sometimes elusive goal of wellness, she says. http://spr.ly/6046oFVnO

  • The FDA’s approval of a blood test for colorectal cancer screening gives individuals at average risk the option to easily screen for the disease, starting at age 45. Penn Medicine Family Medicine physician Kenneth Lin, MD, MPH, was among a group of experts across three core specialties involved in the screening and treatment of colorectal cancer— primary care, gastroenterology, and oncology—interviewed to better understand both the potential value and potential pitfalls of this new option. http://spr.ly/6047oqstc

  • It was so great to be with everyone at the Greater Elizabethtown Area Senior Center this week to share important information on fall prevention--a major cause of hip fractures and other traumatic injuries that often require surgery. Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Matthew Poorman with Penn Orthopaedics Suburban Pavilion in Lancaster, discussed ways to help seniors stay safe, including: 🔺 Stay physically active with a safe exercise program that includes balance and strength training. 🔺 Make your home safe with good lighting, handrails/grab bars, and non-slip mats. 🔺 Stay up to date on vision and hearing testing. 🔺 Learn about the side effects of your medications. 🔺 Limit alcohol intake. 🔺 Use a cane or walker if it helps you feel more steady. 🔺 Tell your doctor if you feel sleepy, dizzy, or confused, and have fallen since your last visit. Penn Medicine Orthopaedics Suburban Pavilion is expanding and accepting new patients for orthopaedic treatment and care. Learn more and schedule an appointment here: http://spr.ly/6042oFr80

  • Residents Leilal Hilal, MD, left, and Kanza Bajwa, DO, did a great job representing the Lancaster General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program at last week's Family Medicine Education Consortium - FMEC annual meeting in Philadelphia. Dr.Hilal was also among those presenting on how the IMPLICIT Network is improving care for birthing people in the 4th trimester--a transitional period between childbirth and 12 weeks postpartum. This is a high-risk time when more than half of pregnancy-related deaths and postpartum complications occur. IMPLICIT (Interventions to Minimize Preterm and Low birth weight Infants through Continuous Improvement Techniques) aims to identify people with health-related concerns that could lead to complications during or after giving birth, schedule all patients for early postpartum visits, and establish a care team to ensure quality care in the postpartum period. This focus on improving the birthing person’s health will positively impact the baby's health.

  • Myles Hoffman has had to put his firefighting and welding aspirations on hold while the 18-year-old receives treatment for stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma at the Penn Medicine Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. His care providers, oncologist Timothy Beer, MD, and physician assistant Madison Carey, PA-C, are guiding Hoffman through his treatment journey, offering support and adjustments to his chemo regimen to lessen side effects along the way. “His prognosis is great,” Carey said. “Hopefully we won’t keep him from welding for too long.” http://spr.ly/6042o8vCm

  • Facing surgery can be a scary experience. For one patient, being in the care of Jade Mainello, BSN, RN, a cardiology nurse at Lancaster General Hospital, made all the difference. "Jade took the time to answer any questions I had," he said. "She listened and responded in a calming manner and gave a good explanation of the details of pacemaker surgery. I was nervous and uncomfortable, but Jade’s presence was comforting to me." Congratulations, Jade, on being honored with a The DAISY Foundation Award for your extraordinary skill and compassion!
