And the prestigious ADCOLOR Conference and Awards serve as the premiere gathering honoring, amplifying and celebrating creative pioneers, leaders and projects. For our work bringing voice to disability inclusion within the music industry and other facets of pop culture through RAMPD, board service and the tons of awesome things we get up to, I find myself privileged to be on the nominee ticket. Making disability dope and relevant in a superficial world hellbent on perfection is not an easy feat, but we take it head-on with passion and grace. However, I say 'we' because I would never have been able to get where I am without the amazing people I work with. So a huge shoutout to Arthur Gwynne, Kylie Miller, Stacey D. Barker and Joe Gooch at Team Lachi, Anya Cherneff, MA, Precious Perez and Salvador Lopez Lorenzo at Team RAMPD, Rhea Ghosh, Sharon Tapper and all who've supported me at the GRAMMYs, Day Al-Mohamed for tossing me a series regular opportunity, and folks like Laura Lee Mattingly, Alysyn Reinhardt and Tim Vandehey for saying, 'your words matter and people should hear them'! I Identify as Blind. I eat barriers for breakfast. Ask me anything: Q: You look like you can see, are you actually blind? A: I am legally blind. Only 15% of blind people are totally blind. Q: Do all blind or low vision people use a cane or dog? A: About 2-8% use a cane or dog. The rest are free-balling it. Q: If you’re blind how can you read? A: Very carefully (Magnifiers, screen readers, Braille, oh my!) Q: Do blind folks have supernatural senses? A: Nope. Still tryna win the lotto. Q: How can one “identify” as blind? You’re either blind or not. A: Disability identity means holding a sense of connection or solidarity with the disability community. Claiming one’s disability identity is different than just “having” a disability. Q: You’re not disabled, you can do anything! A: I am disabled. Yesterday I had the privilege to witness the 75th NATO summit at the Andrew W Mellon Auditorium in D.C. Beyond the dynamic music, words and pageantry (all things I love) came a powerful display of friendship and a history of building community through times of adversity (the thing I love the most)! The only thing cooler than being in the room to witness President Joe Biden give Sec Gen Jens Stoltenberg the Medal of Freedom, was getting to chill with my girl Senator Tammy Duckworth. Allyship, whether between countries, friends or just two people trying to navigate the world with autonomy, is about respect, empathy and honor. Allies don’t put a hand down to lift someone out of the water, that’s a lifeguard. And Allyship is a handshake, where both sides recognize the other as an opportunity, as strength, as a win. I once wrote a song called "That Girl" about how I'd never be that girl on a magazine cover. Here I am today, loud and proud, gracing the cover of Star Central! Happy Disability Pride Month! When I was young, I never imagined anyone would want to hear what I have to say. Feeling invisible and unpretty. for most of my younger-life, I did everything I could to hide the fact I was legally blind. Use a cane? NEVER! I needed to blend into the background, so as to not draw further attention to my disability and get further singled-out for bullying and ableism. It took me years to realize that I, me, was being ableist....towards myself. That I was perpetuating erasure, dimming my own light, for what? The comfort of others? Today, I walk proudly down the street with glam-cane first, big smiles, big style, and weave a celebration of the pride I have in my disability identity into everything I do---from my music, to my fashion, to my corny humor. "Coming Out" about my disability has allowed me to tap fully into the resilience, adaptability, innovation, creativity, drive and visionary that has come with my unique, beautiful, talented, smart and whole body-mind. Happy Disability Pride Month! This is your reminder to do what you can to work towards making a more accessible music industry - regardless of the sector you happen to be in. And if you're not sure where to start, you are more than welcome to send me a DM/email - I rarely turn down chances to talk about the importance of this. You can (and should) also follow some other great disabled professionals in our field, including but not limited to: Lachi ♫, Suzanne Bull MBE, and Austin Whitney! Feel free to tag others that I may have missed! I so appreciate everyone's kindness and support toward the work I do. It's never easy and can be very draining, but everything is for a reason!
