About us
Kuaʻāina Ulu ʻAuamo (KUA) means “grassroots growing through shared kuleana (responsibility)” the acronym KUA means backbone. KUA, called into creation in 2011 by a statewide network of over 30 grassroots indigenous and local community based natural resource management groups called E Alu Pū (“move forward together”) works to empower communities to improve their quality of life through caring for their environmental heritage together to better Hawaiʻi and achieve ‘āina momona— an abundant, productive ecological system that supports community well-being. KUA employs a community‐driven approach that currently supports three statewide networks: E Alu Pū, almost 40 traditional Hawaiian fishpond projects and practitioners called the Hui Mālama Loko Iʻa, and a new and growing group of Limu (native seaweed) practitioners called the Limu Hui.

KUA is honored to be involved with discussions about restorative aquaculture here at home and globally. Fishponds could one day contribute again to our food system but first we must help renew the values and practice underpinning the socio-ecological systems that once allowed them to thrive. Restorative aquaculture could serve to heal our ecosystem first as essential infrastructure supporting more food fish on our shorelines again. A thought piece on a roadmap to restorative aquatic foods worked on among a cohort of aquaculture thinkers at a gathering in Bellagio, Italy just came out in Nature magazine. As the American Fisheries Society opens up it conference in Hawai'i this week we are proud to feature an article co-written by one of our community leaders and E Alu Pu co-founder Uncle Damien Kenison of Ho'okena (Kauhako) Bay on Hawai'i island with researchers like Professor Ron Vave of the University of Hawai'i's Pacific Island Studies Program: "Marine ecosystems provide essential services to coastal residents, particularly for indigenous fishing communities that have strong ties to the environment and obtain multiple benefits from their use and management of ocean spaces. However, understanding of how these are impacted by fisheries, external pressures, and ocean management, remains limited due to a focus on economic valuation and aggregated metrics. This study explores the importance of select marine ecosystem services to the wellbeing of an indigenous community in West Hawaiˈi and the observed impacts on these ecosystem services by commercial and subsistence fishing." https://lnkd.in/gE76Kh-Y
