On July 22nd, the Department of Defense (DoD) awarded Constellium Muscle Shoals LLC $23 million via the Defense Production Act Investment (DPAI) program. The intention behind this award is to increase capacity in annual casting production, secure capability to keep US mills supplied, as well as providing surge capacity to support US security commitments around the world. Additionally, Constellium plans to use these funds to increase its recycled input and reduce its use of primary metal. The award to Constellium is the latest of 18 made by the DPAI program that so far totals $381 million since the beginning of the fiscal year.

Last week, I spent a week at Kripke Enterprises Inc. in Toledo, Ohio for a quick week long internship to learn about the recycled metal materials industry. During my week-long internship, I was fortunate to work with an incredibly kind and helpful team who made learning about the metal recycling industry both informational and enjoyable. The atmosphere was extremely professional yet welcoming. At Kripke they make sure that they follow their three core values to a tea (we do what we say, relationships are the backbone of the company, and we provide solutions). I also learned about the importance of recycling metals for both the environment and the economy, how to classify different types of metals, and the overall workings of the industry. This experience opened my eyes to the vital role metal recycling plays, and I’m grateful for the knowledge and the friendly environment I got to be a part of. Thank you again to everyone at Kripke Enterprises, Inc for being so kind, informative, and supportive. I truly had such a great experience and will be able to utilize the skills I learned here to propel myself into the workforce.

Heavy Rain 🤝 Hydropower Reserves Smelters in Yunnan have resumed production after heavy rain fall restored hydropower reserves. As a result, China's aluminum production hit a record high for the month of May. According to Bloomberg, an additional 330,000 tons of capacity is anticipated to resume this month (June). With this, Bloomberg also anticipates aluminum prices to drop in June, citing softened demand following the recent market spike. Given that we are well into June, do you believe increasing production is partially to blame for current market conditions as well? Or is the aftermath of the market spike the one true catalyst?

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations has selected Century Aluminum Company to begin award negotiations for up to $500 million to build a new aluminum smelter. The planned smelter would be the first new primary aluminum smelter built State side in 45 years. Upon completion, the smelter is anticipated to double the size of the current U.S. prime aluminum industry. Century's Green Smelter is one of 33 projects across more than 20 states set to receive funding. Said projects will not only move energy-intensive industries toward net zero, but also strengthen economies, create jobs, and diminish greenhouse gas emissions. What are your thoughts on this?
