Last month, we welcomed nearly 600 interns to Kohl's as part of our annual summer internship program. It’s an important talent pipeline for us – in fact, more than 1,000 of our current associates started as Kohl’s interns! In the 14 years I’ve been with Kohl’s, I’ve met many of these associates and am often in awe of their stories. So to celebrate the kick-off of this year’s internship program, I sat down with Eudulia (Elle) Velez and Darrell Martin – two current associates and former interns. Their journeys of perseverance, breaking down stereotypes, and exemplifying what it takes to cultivate an inclusive environment are incredible. Elle was part of our 2011 intern class and is now a store manager in Conroe, Texas, which has a sizeable Hispanic population. Elle has been instrumental in creating an inclusive shopping experience for her customers by working with Kohl’s Hispanic y Latino BRG to implement bilingual signs, music and graphics. Darrell was part of last year’s intern class and now works as an associate software engineer. Despite the engineering field being predominantly white, Darrell gives credit to the power of representation, which encouraged him to explore and ultimately land a job in the field.    Thank you, Elle and Darrell, for sharing your stories. Juneteenth is a significant holiday in American history. In June of 1865, the last remaining slaves were freed in Galveston, Texas, commemorating the end of slavery and the resiliency of Black people. Kohl's customer service coordinator, Richard Harris, was born and raised in Galveston where his ancestors were once enslaved. While Richard shared that his family celebrates the day with barbecues and bonfires, he also honors the day by educating others about the holiday’s significance. “By examining the moments of our past, we gain insights into our collective journey and empower ourselves to continue striving for a better future. It's through this reflection that we can evolve and address the ongoing challenges we face as a society,” said Richard. “As I celebrate today, I am grateful for the opportunities and freedoms that my family and I enjoy. Juneteenth is more than just a historical event; it is a testament to the endurance of the human spirit and a celebration of our shared journey toward freedom and equality.” This Juneteenth, I encourage you all to come together, reflect, and work toward a brighter, more inclusive future. The title of ‘dad’ is one many of our Kohl's associates own. What makes Kohl’s truly unique is that our associates care about one another and can learn from each other -- both professionally and personally. When starting at Kohl’s almost a decade ago, Logan N. Gill, manager of marketing project coordination and father of two, never anticipated his colleagues would be such a sense of support and inspiration as his family grew. “Kohl’s has introduced me to incredible mentorship relationships - both formal and informal. More importantly, I've learned from other working parents, which has helped me become a better parent and man,” Logan recently shared. “It’s about advocating for myself, learning from other more experienced parents, listening to my wife and relentlessly pursuing this ideal of being present in the moment. I loved seeing so many new faces around campus last week as we welcomed our new class of Kohl's summer interns.  We have nearly 600 interns representing 46 states and more than 250 universities nationwide across our corporate headquarters, stores, and e-fulfillment and distribution centers. Over the summer, these students will get unique business exposure as they participate in development sessions, think tanks, volunteer projects, and hear from c-suite executives. In some departments, interns are rotated throughout their summer to expose them to several unique job duties and roles, and in the last few weeks of their internship, interns showcase what they’ve learned by leading store walks, presenting final projects, or providing oversight to a department within a distribution or e-fulfillment center. I’ve had the chance to meet a number of our interns already – addressing the group and meeting several individually, and I am looking forward to connecting with more across the company throughout the summer. This week we kicked off our 2024 summer internship! We are so thrilled to welcome almost 600 interns to #lifeatkohls throughout our Stores, DC/EFC, Corporate, Remote (Tech-only), NYDO, and San Ramon locations. We’ve already had the opportunity to meet so many interns who are ambitious, creative, determined, and most importantly, our future leaders. Pride Month is officially here! As we use this month to embrace love in all forms, let’s celebrate the LGBTQIA community and create more spaces for people to live out loud. Kohl's has a long history of supporting the LGBTQIA community, and it’s important for our associates to feel valued and respected, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. I am grateful to all the members of Kohl’s Pride Business Resource Group (BRG), who play an integral role in this. Our Pride BRG supports our LGBTQIA associates and is an invaluable part of our welcoming and inclusive culture. Over the next few weeks, two of their members, Paulina Garcia Morones and Matt McFall, will share their thoughts on Pride and how LGBTQIA allies can support their community all year long.
