About us
Revolutionizing Farming For a Healthier Planet and Better Animal Welfare We redefine the role of livestock in the food ecosystem. Our chickens contribute to a better environment and prevent food waste by turning surpluses of agriculture and food processing into nutritious eggs and meat, as well as valuable fertilizers. The carefully controlled upcycled feed contains, for example, leftovers from sources such as large bakeries, and pasta factories. In close collaboration with scientists and animal welfare organizations, the Kipster Farm was designed for the chicken's needs. Chickens are forest birds, and the farm is set up for them to carry out our natural behaviors as much as possible. Outdoor gardens and indoor gardens with perches, haybales, peck stones, daylight and dustbathing spaces allow for the hens to express their natural behavior.

During summer, between spring and autumn wild bird migrations, cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza tend to drop. With the risk of avian influenza being lower in the farm’s area, the Kipster farm visitor’s center has reopened, and the hens are back outside. But the fall migration is upon us and risks are expected to increase. During these high-risk periods, the hens are kept inside. Each Kipster house has a large daylight-filled indoor garden where the chickens can still express their natural behavior while in lockdown. Here are some additional key measures taken to ensure the wellbeing of the chickens: - Plenty of natural daylight in the hen houses to maintain chicken well-being and natural rhythms. - Fresh air: Robust ventilation for air quality and health. - Enrichments include hay bales, perches, climbing structures and peck stones. Peck stones allow chickens to condition their untrimmed beaks and hay bales provide a distraction as well as fiber to prevent pecking. - Litter on the floor for dust bathing. - Feed spread across the floor to keep them foraging. People can still see the hens via live-streaming cameras (see YouTube @kipster.farm), even when the visitor center is closed. "Kipster, which claims to be “the first carbon-neutral” egg hatchery in the world, will also be the first to sell eggs in the U.S. using a new kind of technology, one that aims to improve animal welfare for chickens. In-ovo sexing technology enables egg producers to identify the sex of the chicken embryo before hatching." Correction: Kipster is an egg farm and not a hatchery. Also, if the technology was used to sex the hatching eggs in the fall, as the article claims, then it takes at least over 20-25 weeks before the table eggs reach the retail shelf.
