This month, KHSU-Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine student doctors had the opportunity to shadow health care professionals, engage with local city officials and provide community service in western Kansas through the school’s Summer Rural Immersion Program. Students and faculty visited Dodge City and Garden City – two rural Kansas communities impacted by the shortage in physicians – with the goal of exposing student doctors to these areas that they could eventually come back to and make a difference as practicing physicians. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly recently announced that Kansas Health Science University is one of 26 nonprofits in Kansas to receive Community Service Program Tax Credits. KHSU-Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine plans to use the tax credits, as well as additional funds that will be raised from donors, to build a biomedical laboratory.
