Today is World Blood Donor Day, an annual observance for raising awareness of the need for a safe and stable blood supply as well as celebrating blood donors for their lifesaving contributions. According to the American Red Cross, U.S. blood donors has hit an all-time low with only three out of 100 people giving blood. As a result, there is a 20,000-donation shortfall. Earlier this year, KHSC-Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine hosted a blood drive in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day that aligned with National Day of Service. Collaborating with the American Red Cross of Kansas, 38 student doctors, staff and faculty addressed the urgent need for blood while also honoring Dr. King’s legacy of united action to effect positive change.
