A huge thanks to Phys.org for covering our research on the behavioral ecology of transient killer whales in Monterey Bay, California. I love the infographic they created! This infographic shows how much time transient killer whales engage in different behaviors and the marine mammal prey they hunt. This research is just the beginning of what we hope to learn about the ecology, behavior, and conservation of killer whales off the California coast. Josh and I worked extensively cataloging the movement patterns of Killer Whales in Monterey and documenting hunting strategies employed by the whales along the the Monterey Submarine Canyon. Check out our publication!
My co-authors and I are please to share our new publication published in PLOS ONE titled: Foraging Behaviour and Ecology of Transient Killer Whales Within a Deep Submarine Canyon System. This paper has been a dream for me. It highlights a detailed quantitative analysis outlining how transient killer whales use specialized foraging behaviours to hunt marine mammals in the Monterey Submarine Canyon System off the Central California coast. We provide an activity budget highlighting differences in time spent in different behaviours, and dive into the seasonal occurrence patterns of transients in relation to prey species. Here is the press release! 🎉 I feel so fortunate to be a part of such groundbreaking marine mammal research.
Shark-bitten orcas in the Northeastern Pacific could be a new population of killer whale UBC researchers (Josh McInnes & Andrew Trites) believe a group of killer whales observed hunting marine mammals including sperm whales, as well as a sea turtle, in the open ocean off California and Oregon could be a new population. https://lnkd.in/dx_P6KPq #whales #orca #pacificocean

Working hard on a third Killer Whale publication at UBC this weekend. Hyper focused doing some advanced GIS analysis to map out Killer Whale distribution patterns and observational effort all along the West Coast. #UBC #marinemammals #orcas #killerwhales #GIS #arcgispro #esri

My research partner Josh presented his amazing work cataloging and researching the Killer Whales on the Oregon coast last night and you can watch that presentation here! You can see some of the mapping I’ve done for the research as well 🙂 https://lnkd.in/gimxF2Mr
