Disability Pride Month is now celebrated every July to mark the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. Karp Strategies is proud to support the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 34th Anniversary on July 26. More than 1 in 4 Americans live with a disability, which may have visible or invisible effects. The ADA is a vital civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places open to the general public. In the workplace, many teams—including ours at Karp Strategies—include members living with disabilities who must be acknowledged and cared for with empathy. The law's purpose is to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else—which ultimately leads to more creative, inclusive, and kinder workplaces. #ADA #ADA34 #ThanksToTheADA

KS in the News: Check out Bisnow’s feature highlighting the proposal to eliminate NYC’s “sliver law,” quoting our Director of Real Estate Economic Development, Annie White! Her insights on the need for government and the private sector to come together to comprehensively address the housing shortage underscore our commitment at Karp Strategies to spearhead equitable real estate solutions. Annie emphasized the potential cumulative impact of revising silver laws to permit “a little bit of housing everywhere,” a core tenant of Mayor Adam’s “City of Yes for Housing Opportunity” plan. Karp Strategies is excited to see new zoning policies that reflect our current market conditionals and architectural advancements in order to foster inclusive growth across urban landscapes. https://lnkd.in/g_m7civr #KarpStrategies #Housing #RealEstate #EconomicDevelopment #CommunityPlanning #UrbanPlanning

Congratulations to the Gateway Development Commission (GDC) on securing funding for the Hudson Tunnel Project. This milestone marks a significant step forward in enhancing mass transit infrastructure. Huge congratulations to all involved in achieving this incredible milestone! #HudsonTunnelProject #FederalFunding #InfrastructureDevelopment
Today we reached the point of no turning back for the Hudson Tunnel Project. Signing the Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) and executing the low-interest RRIF loans for the HTP locked in the final pieces of the historic $12 billion federal commitment to this project. Together with the $4 billion local contribution, we now have the entire $16 billion needed to complete this project. This is a historic achievement that moves us one step closer to ensuring a reliable, modern rail commute for millions of commuters up and down the Northeast Corridor. With full funding secured, we can now begin heavy construction and tunnel boring. By the end of the year, we will have more than $5 billion in contracts awarded, construction will be under way on both sides of the Hudson River, and our first Tunnel Boring Machine will be in production. We would not be here without the steadfast support of many partners in Washington, New York, and New Jersey. Thank you President Biden, Secretary Buttigieg, Majority Leader Schumer, Governor Phil Murphy, Governor Kathy Hochul, the members of the Build Gateway Now Coalition, and the many other partners who have worked with us to reach this milestone.

Today is Disabilities Awareness Day, which is dedicated to acknowledging and supporting people with disabilities. Over 1 in 4 Americans live with a disability, affecting mobility, cognition, self-care, and other aspects of day-to-day life in ways both visible and invisible. How these disabilities affect people varies greatly in its impact. They often pose challenges that require self-advocacy, especially for those with invisible disabilities. However, disabilities of all kinds can push people to cultivate unique strengths and abilities, especially perseverance and grit. Perhaps most importantly, people can contribute insights from a different perspective. In exchange, it also sometimes requires extra understanding and support from others. This week of recognition brings awareness and empathy to this issue. From films to book recommendations, below are easy ways to learn more, promote awareness, and break down the stigma of disabilities. Film/TV: → Crip Camp (Documentary) → CODA (Film) → Special (TV Series) Books: → Year of The Tiger: An Activist’s Life by Alice Wong → Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century by Alice Wong → Sitting Pretty: The View from My Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body by Rebekah Taussig → Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law by Haben Girma → The Pretty One: On Life, Pop Culture, Disability, and Other Reasons to Fall in Love with Me by Keah Brown → We’re Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation by Eric Garcia → Demystifying Disability: What to Know, What to Say, and How to Be an Ally by Emily Ladau → Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha #DisabilitiesAwarenessDay #InclusionMatters #UniqueStrengths

Had a great walking tour yesterday of the Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan area with ULI New York! Thank you to our friends at NYC Department of City Planning and Council Member Hudson's office for leading the group and sharing the history and importance of this collaborative neighborhood planning process. While a lot of eyes are on the City of Yes for Housing Opportunities proposal, this rezoning would bring much needed mixed-income housing and infrastructure improvements to a busy corridor that connects many of our fastest growing Brooklyn neighborhoods (including my home of Crown Heights!) AAMUP is entering ULURP soon, so you can find out more information and get involved here: https://lnkd.in/g22sHnnX

Saturday, July 13th, marks the 17th annual City of Water Day, celebrating New York and New Jersey’s waterfront and harbors! Organized by the Waterfront Alliance and the Hudson River Foundation, City of Water Day is a region-wide day filled with waterfront fun and community spirit. From kayaking to workshops, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Join us in celebrating the importance of a resilient and equitable waterfront. At Karp Strategies, we believe that coastal resilience and equity are deeply intertwined. Championing equitable waterfront resilience involves connecting broader issues of urban and environmental ecosystems to the day-to-day experiences of communities. Our work, supporting projects such as the Red Hook Coastal Resiliency Project, aims to integrate local community voices in implementing coastal protection systems. Red Hook Coastal Resiliency holistically blends design, science, and human experience toward a resilient waterfront and a more equitable urban future. To participate in Saturday's celebration, connect with your local waterfront by exploring the City of Water Day event map! Over 60 events are held in the five boroughs, NJ, and the lower Hudson Valley to engage with and enjoy your local waterfronts while learning about the importance of resilience and access. https://lnkd.in/ejqiFFiY #CityofWaterDay #Equity #Waterfront #Resilience
