"It was almost like science fiction," says Rosalind Lai, MD, assistant professor of neurosurgery at University at Buffalo (UB). Lai was part of a team that recently completed a feasibility study for a permanently implantable device that allows people with severe paralysis to operate technology such as mobile devices and computers using their thoughts. That’s right – their thoughts. The results of this breakthrough study were presented yesterday by Elad Levy, MD, MBA, the co-director of the Gates Stroke Center and Cerebrovascular Surgery at Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute (BGMC/GVI), who was awarded for his efforts at The Congress of Neurological Surgeons in Houston. Soon, patients will be enrolled for this procedure at sites across the U.S., including Buffalo’s own BGMC/GVI. It’s groundbreaking research that is the result of incredible collaboration between BGMC/GVI, UB Department of Neurosurgery and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Read the full story here. http://ms.spr.ly/6049m5iaS

Important news: At the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) annual meeting, Elad Levy, MD, MBA, will present feasibility study results of the first permanently implanted brain-computer interface! And there’s more: For this abstract, Levy is being awarded the Duke Samson Award, which recognizes the best clinical paper addressing a topic of cerebrovascular surgery! The study, the COMMAND trial, assessed safety while evaluating quantified efficacy measures of Synchron’s brain-computer interface device, which allows people with limited to no mobility to operate technology (like mobile devices and computers) using their thoughts. Levy says the technology is designed to give functional independence back to patients who have become paralyzed. Intrigued by how the Synchron technology works and how it’s implanted? Curious about why alumna and faculty member Rosalind Lai, MD — who was at the time a UB neuroendovascular fellow — says the experience was almost like science fiction? Interested in why bioengineers at The Jacobs Institute created engineered precision 3D printed models? Want to find out why it was a natural choice for Synchron to come to experts in Buffalo? ⚡ It’s all in our full news story: http://ms.spr.ly/6049m5iaS Levy, a principal investigator, is SUNY Distinguished Professor and the L. Nelson Hopkins, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo. He also is co-director of the Gates Stroke Center and Cerebrovascular Surgery at Kaleida Health’s Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute (GVI) and president of University at Buffalo Neurosurgery (UBNS). An alumnus, he completed UB’s neuroendovascular fellowship in 2003. #UBuffalo #Neurosurgery #BrainComputerInterface #CerebrovascularSurgery #DigitalMotorOutput #Endovascular #UBAlumni #CNS #BuffaloNY

Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital (MFSH), in collaboration with WNY Urology Associates, is proud to be the first hospital in the area to begin offering Adstiladrin©, an innovative gene therapy treatment for bladder cancer. Astiladrin is the first and only FDA-approved gene therapy delivered directly into the bladder for non–muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). The targeted treatment administered every three months, works with the body’s immune cells to fight the cancer in the bladder only, and does not impact the whole body’s immune system. An added patient benefit is the comfort and convenience of being provided under the care of their urologist. “We are extremely proud to be the first in the area to offer bladder cancer patients this innovative treatment for NMIBC at Millard Suburban,” said Kent Chevli, MD, FACS, site director of Urology at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital and president, Western New York Urology & Cancer Care of WNY. “The effectiveness and minimal side effects seen during clinical trials are very promising. Being able to offer our patients access to this type of advanced cancer care and improved outcomes is truly remarkable.” Read more https://lnkd.in/e7X8JXut
