Justice Outside advances racial justice and equity in the outdoor and environmental movement.

About us

Justice Outside advances racial justice and equity in the outdoor and environmental movement. We shift resources to, build power with, and center the voices and leadership of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color because the health of current and future generations demands it. We envision a just world where Black, Indigenous, and Communities of Color experience safety, health, and abundant joy through meaningful relationships with one another and the outdoors. We’ve long worked to remove the barriers that have historically prevented communities from accessing meaningful experiences in nature and professional opportunities in the outdoor sector. We know that participating in outdoor programming offers those who have been most impacted by racial injustice a powerful source of healing and growth. Justice Outside has reached an exciting time in our organization’s history. Against a backdrop of increased urgency around racial equity and broad shifts in public consciousness in support of dismantling systemic racism, the need and demand for our work is greater than ever. We are poised to keep growing our capacity-building and leadership development work and continue building experiences that will position emerging leaders of color to influence the field at large.

Thank you to everyone who made our EdVenture a wholesome one! Our first two day community event, Go on an EdVenture! hosted a range of outdoor activities and workshops for all interests and levels for free at Lake Chabot. From kayaking to birding to weaving to herbal tea making and more, around 80 people of all ages learned new skills, made new connections, and embraced the spirit of “being useless to capitalism.” A special thank you to our emcee Rachael Meyers, executive director at Youth on Root, and our facilitators Healing Waters, Golden Gate Bird Alliance, Carolyn Sideco, Jianna Robinson, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Mariah Davis, Sophie Klimcak, Michelle Cai, Bella Mayorga, and Audra Barrios. At Potrero Group, we believe in continuous learning and the power of community and collaboration. Associate Search Consultant, Sherifa Holder, recently attended the PGM ONE, We Are One: Environmentalists of Color conference hosted by Justice Outside and Next 100 Coalition. She returned deeply inspired and brimming with inspiration and a renewed sense of purpose. Sherifa described the space as a family reunion with warm, welcoming people eager to collaborate and share resources. The conference used Deepa Iyer’s social change map to highlight each person’s instrumental role in the environmental movement. Sherifa shared that being among brilliant people of color in the environmental space allowed her to feel seen and empowered. She engaged in many exciting conversations and workshops and learned about the work of impressive organizations right in her Atlanta backyard. As she continues to plant her roots in this space, she intends to become an active participant in these organizations. Sherifa’s main takeaway is the reminder that we are all humans who care about the environment, and the more we collaborate, the stronger and more effective we are.

I am thrilled to be a finalist at the International Live Events Association (ILEA) Esprit Awards in the categories of both Planning and Multi-Day Event! The event being recognized was the inaugural Cultivating Community Outdoors Conference for our clients Justice Outside. We had an amazing time bringing the community together to celebrate their work that advances racial justice and equity in the outdoor and environmental movement. It was a co-creation that brought the vision to life. Shout-out to our key partners that made the two-days so successful: BB Events (LaRhonda Chargois and RJB - Rachel Jacob Barnett), Kissel Uptown Oakland, in the Unbound Collection by Hyatt, Encore and @msanchez.studio The double recognition for this event is a humbling acknowledgment of our exceptional organizing, attention to detail, respect for communication and embrace of collaboration. Thank you partners! Winners will be announced at the International Live Events Association (ILEA) Esprit Awards in Seattle in August as part of the the annual i24 convening. #wheredetailsmatter #co-creation #socialimpact
