July 26, 1990. A historic day that changed our country. 34 years ago, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed by Congress and signed into law. What did it change? The ADA prohibits discrimination against disabled people in all areas of public life. This meant: ✔️ People with disabilities gained legal protection against discrimination in employment, public services, and public accommodations ✔️ Public spaces and businesses were required to make reasonable modifications to accommodate disabled people ✔️ Transit systems and phone services had to become accessible The ADA's passage marked a significant shift in how American society viewed and treated disabled people, but it was just the beginning. We are still in the process of rebuilding our world to be more accessible and equitable. Our work at Joshin is possible today because of the disabled activists that fought for decades for this legislation. It's possible because of the individuals that crawled up the steps of Congress to show quite literally how inaccessible architecture impacts disabled people. It's possible because disabled people refused to let up. As organizations strip the word "equity" from their inclusion policies, we affirm that it was in fact EQUITY that brought about the ADA. Equity addresses systemic barriers. It levels the playing field and ensures equal access as a human right. Equity is not a fixed thing – it is a constant work towards something better. -- #ADA #DisabilityJustice #DisabilityRights #Accessibility #DisabilityInclusion Image Description: Disabled activists are climbing the steps of the U.S. Capitol during protests in 1990. Is your AI hiring assistant biased? 👀 A University of Washington study revealed AI bias in resume screening for disabled applicants. ChatGPT ranked disability-related CVs lower, making unfounded assumptions about skills and performance. However, when instructed on disability justice and DEI principles, AI rankings improved. 👉 This highlights an important opportunity that Joshin supports companies like Best Buy and Hearst with: Educating team about bias, disability, and neurodiversity to create inclusive hiring processes that proactively prevent discrimination. We can harness AI's capabilities while maintaining informed human oversight to ensure we don't exclude valuable talent. Discover how our co-founder and CEO Melissa Danielsen utilizes Joshin to support both her daughter and her own well-being. 👇
My 7-year-old helped me learn something about myself. She has a sensory integration disorder, and for years, I've worked closely with her to help her regulate. Disruptions to her routine or sleep can easily lead to dysregulation, so through Joshin, we set up a 504 plan at school to support her success and avoid after-school meltdowns. Despite all our progress, things have been a bit off for her lately. When I received my diagnosis of ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, I saw how intertwined my regulation was with my daughter's. To support her, I had to prioritize my self-care, despite the discomfort of focusing on my needs as a parent. So I turned to Joshin again, but this time for my own support. I connected with Karina, one of our expert coaches. I initially wanted to talk about my daughter's dysregulation and discuss about how to get her back on track, but instead, she gently redirected that perhaps we should review how to manage my self-care. What did we discover? My daughter was co-regulating with me, but my busy work travel caused my self-care to suffer, affecting my ability to co-regulate with her effectively. It's so easy to forget that how we care for ourselves directly impacts how we show up for others. I now see how prioritizing my own self-care means prioritizing my daughter's progress in co-regulation and self-regulation. Since my daughter's wellbeing is my top priority, my self-care has to be equally important. Now, imagine if every employee (and yes, even the CEO) had resources and coaches to learn how to improve their well-being and manage a new diagnosis. It could mean you can show up as a more engaged leader, a more balanced parent, and most importantly, a more confident you. I know I am. – #ADHD #NeurodiversityAtWork

Happy Disability Pride Month! As we move from #PrideMonth to #DisabilityPride, we're reminded that both Prides are a moment to be joyous and celebrate what makes us all intrinsically beautiful – our disabilities, our neurodivergences, our stories. Disability Pride is also a moment to reflect on where we’ve been, how we got here, who got us here, and honor what comes next. All month long, we'll be sharing ways to celebrate Disability Pride. You can expect stories and content by disabled creators, a webinar all about workplace disclosure from panelists with lived experience, and resources you can share and learn from. Disability Pride is about amplifying voices that have been systemically left out. Disability Pride is about creating a more accessible world. Disability Pride is about seeing injustice and doing something about it. -- #DisabilityRights #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityAwareness Image Description: A graphic with a tan background with text that reads, "Action moves us forward." in bold dark green, highlighted in yellow.
