Royal is redefining music ownership
About us
Royal is redefining music ownership. Helmed by co-founders Justin Blau (3LAU) and JD Ross, Royal uses blockchain technology to enable anyone to own rights in songs. Music ownership has historically been limited to labels, private equity, and hedge funds, with artists often retaining only a small percentage of ownership, if any. Royal gives artists the ability to maintain control over their work, share a piece of it with their fans, and access a new revenue stream as they build deeper connections with people who are invested in their music’s success. Backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Paradigm, Coinbase Ventures, Founders Fund, Creative Artists Agency, and musicians like Nas, The Chainsmokers, and Diplo, Royal brings music ownership to the masses and empowers artists to create more value for their music. We recently piloted a new product we’ve been working on called "IRL" in Austin at the F1 Closing party. We asked ourselves, “How do you bring real-life events onchain in a way that benefits both attendees and event organizers?” The solution was to keep it simple. We embedded entry bands into the event with NFC technology that minted NFTs for partygoers when they tapped them with their phones. We thought a few people would participate. But over 250 non-crypto native people minted a token throughout the night (on Coinbase's Base L2 chain). This was just a test, but in the future, we imagine a world where people can collect memories from live events in the form of NFTs, and tokens can act as an onchain proof of attendance for event organizers to reward concertgoers with special perks. We’re just getting started on this idea and look forward to testing and building on top of it in the future!
