Shadow with Atlantis to get the 3 things medical schools want: healthcare exposure, GPA/MCAT & AAMC competencies.

About us

Our Alumni Have Gone On to 40 of the Top 50 U.S. MD Programs Medical schools want 3 things: (1) healthcare exposure, (2) GPA/MCAT, and (3) AAMC competencies. When you shadow with Atlantis, you improve all 3. As a bonus, you get to do this while studying abroad during school breaks. 1. Best Healthcare Exposure: Compared to typical clinical experiences, Atlantis shadowing brings far greater depth, breadth, quantity, and intercultural perspective: the four traits medical schools value in any healthcare experience. 2. Focus More on Grades: Extracurriculars over breaks, better grades during your semester. Most students don’t prioritize GPA/MCAT enough; doing Atlantis shadowing over break accomplishes so much extracurricular-wise that you can cut out some activities during the year. 3. Show AAMC Competencies To Med Schools: Atlantis shadowing helps you refine and showcase most of the competencies on which medical schools assess applicants, creating powerful stories for your applications and interviews.

Thank you to Atlantis for the opportunity to visit your program sites in Portugal! It was at once informative and rejuvenating, to experience a day-in-a-life of students shadowing abroad while also making meaningful connections with fellow pre-health colleagues across institutions. The program included visiting hospitals, information sessions with hospital staff and faculty, as well as current students participating abroad. The insights gained, and the miles walked (!), was gratifying, knowing students would have a robust and insightful experience on their health professions journey. And so wonderful meeting everyone! Including Lindsey Molusky, Joel Felcher, Kristin Tocci, Reginald Lucien, Ph.D., Gregory Hollinger, Bernadette Dunphy

Over the summer, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Atlantis Fellowship. Through Atlantis, I spent three weeks in Washington, D.C., working on a public health-related project with Children's National Hospital and their Child Health Advocacy Institute (CHAI). In collaboration with my team, I worked with the Healthy Food Working Group to create materials to bolster the hospital's strategy for reaching community members with resources. As a team, we got the chance to reflect on our experience and conduct interviews with the CHAI about what their work means to them. I am proud to share that my team and I recently published an article about our experience in the Children's National Hospital Blog (see the link below)! I want to thank Chaya Merrill for all her work helping us through the project; it was a fantastic experience! After wrapping up the project in D.C., I spent an additional three weeks in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, and participated in AMA-certified clinical shadowing at the Hospital de Santa Luzia. Through this experience, I gained seventy-plus hours of clinical shadowing in various specialties while building a global network of friends and mentors. I want to thank everyone at Hospital de Santa Luzia for hosting, educating, and mentoring us; I look forward to connecting again soon! https://lnkd.in/dAAQxbED

Hi everyone! From June 24-August 4th I had the amazing opportunity to be a part of the Atlantis program in Rome, Italy and Athens, Greece. This experience allowed me to spend those 6 weeks shadowing healthcare professionals in a variety of departments and exploring the different cultures and experiences that Italy and Greece had to offer. I also had the privilege to shadow in the Azienda Ospedaliera San Camillo Forlanini hospital in Rome and KAT Attica General Hospital in Athens. My first week in Rome, I was able to shadow in the Cardiothoracic Surgery department. I was able to see a coronary artery bypass, a partial valve replacement, and a surgery to fix endocarditis. During my second week I shadowed in the Neurosurgery department. I had the opportunity to see two craniotomies, the insertion of a catheter that connected the ventricles of the brain to the stomach, and a partital tumor resection. This department was one of my favorites and I was mesmerized by seeing the brain and the spine up close. My third week was in the Opthalmology department where I was able to watch multiple cataract surgeries and a complete retina replacement. I also observed the clinical side of this department where I watched laser treatments and eye exams. In Athens, my first week was in the Orthopedic Surgery department. This was an amazing opportunity since the hospital I shadowed at was specialized in Orthopedics and is a large trauma center. I was able to see a distal wrist fracture, a total knee arthroplasty, an epidural, and a partial hip replacement. The second week was in the Cardiology department, this was my first week spent in a non-surgical department. I was able to see more patient-physician interactions and spend time observing in the emergency room. Within this department I learned how to look at ultrasounds of the heart, EKGs, and was able to see a catheter inserted into damaged blood vessels. My final week was in the Plastic Surgery department. This specialty was truly amazing to shadow and allows me to see the reconstructive side of Plastics. I was able to see multiple things through observing in the emergency room and in the outpatient clinic. I also saw doctors treat an individual with 360 third degree burns on their legs. The surgeries I was able to shadow included a muscle resection, skin grafts, and a toe amputation. I appreciate this amazing experience and the opportunity to be in the operating room and witness these amazing surgeries. This is an experience I will forever cherish and hold onto as I make my way into the world of medicine.

Hi everyone! Last month from June 24-July 14th I had the chance to participate in one of the most amazing educational programs in Venice, Italy with Atlantis ! This experience was truly something I could have never imagined and I am beyond appreciative to have had the opportunity to partake in it. My first week in Venice, I got to shadow in the Cardiac Surgery department. It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen in my life. I got to be in the operating room and only about a foot away from open heart surgery. During my time there I got to see a mitral valve replacement, ascending aortic replacement, and a coronary artery bypass. Throughout my second week, I participated in the general surgery department. This might have been my favorite week because the surgeries were all so different from one another, yet all so interesting. For example, we observed a small bowel obstruction repair, cystectomy, fistulotomy, bowel resection, and endoscopic resection. The doctors, nurses, and technicians were all so kind and despite the language barrier, made an effort to get to know each and every one of us. The last week of my experience, I worked in the brain surgery branch of the hospital. They had special technology that allowed them to enlarge the surgery with a microscope and project it on a screen so we could see up-close. I was able to see a craniotomy and a brain tumor resection. I am so appreciative that I got to walk away from this opportunity with not only knowledge of the medical world, but amazing memories and life-long friends.
