He was an energetic speaker who recharged us and inspired some new ideas. But we also had the privilege of hosting Bob’s mom, who participated and beamed with pride. Today we honor Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free. General Gordon Granger read Order No. 3, which affirmed the end of slavery in the states of the former Confederacy. Though President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1st, 1863, freed all enslaved people in the Confederacy, it wasn't enforced by the Union Army in Galveston, TX, until this event. This momentous occasion has been celebrated as #Juneteenth — a combination of "June" and "19th" — for over 150 years. (source: Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture) This morning at our Garfield Heights campus, we held a ceremony to celebrate Juneteenth in Holy Spirit Chapel. Residents and staff enjoyed a short presentation to learn more about the holiday, listened to poetry and song, and received a bracelet. A prayer for Father's Day Heavenly Father, Bless all fathers as they care for their families. Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience, to support them in the work they have to do protecting those who look to them. May they find courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith through the Lord's grace and the intercession of St. Joseph. Bless those fathers who are no longer with us on earth but whose lessons remain with us. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. This Memorial Day weekend, we remember all those who sacrificed their lives in service of our country.
