Updates

  • Jefferson County Commissioners were excited to help members from the negro Southern League Museum cut the ribbon on a new display at the Jefferson County Courthouse (2nd floor outside of Commission Chambers) The exhibit shows the history of the Birmingham Industrial League, which started in 1928 and is still going today. At the ribbon cutting Dr. Layton Revel founder of the museum and researcher for this exhibit presented a special recognition to Jack Swain, who won more championship trophies than any other manager in the league. Many of the players showed up to view the exhibit. This is just the beginning of larger exhibits that the Commission is funding that will be placed at Regions and Rickwood Field preserving this important part of baseball history in Jefferson County. It will be here through October!

Congratulations to District 5 Commissioner Mike Bolin and his Chief of Staff Danielle Cater on finishing up the first half of the Intensive Economic Development Training Course at Auburn University's Government and Economic Development Insitute (GEDI). • Jefferson County Commission President Jimmie Stephens was happy to represent the Commission at the ribbon cutting for the new UAB Medical West Hospital in western Jefferson County. The opening is set for early August, and it's simply stunning. The facility is 412,000 square feet, nine floors, and 200 beds, with an adjacent seven-story medical office building. It will provide state-of-the-art surgical and endoscopy suites, robotic surgery, 12 operating rooms, the very latest in imaging technology, and more intensive care beds for the community. The project has been in the works since 2017 when Cushman & Wakefield/EGS Commercial Real Estate of Birmingham was engaged for site selection. The USDA funded the project, with a total investment of $400 million. Concourse, Raymond James, Thornton Farrish, PNC Bank, GNC, and Maynard, Cooper & Gale assisted in the financial efforts. Johnson Development was the project manager; the design and build team included Brasfield & Gorrie as the general contractor; HKS and KPS as the architects of the development; and CCI, Bhate Geosciences, and Building & Earth as the site engineers.
