We found a very drinkable, peppery and atypically fresh monastrell from Spain. The #AlbertoOrte Monastrell Yecla Elo 2020 has an attractively austere tannic structure similar to Barolo. Pigs are the perfect ploughers at this vineyard in Portugal! Senior Editor Jacobo Llamas met #FilipaPato and william wouters who produce their special wine, Missão, from century-old #ungrafted #baga vines from Bairrada's stony clay limestone soils, spanning 20 hectares with 36 micro parcels. Because these vines had no plantation framework when Filipa and William found them, it was difficult to work with tractors or horses. That's why they use sheep to clear grass until bud break, followed by six pigs—crossbreeds of Vietnamese and local Bísaro pigs—navigating the vines. Missão's grapes undergo partial destemming, three weeks of maceration, and 18 months of aging in foudres, resulting in an elegant wine with depth, freshness, sinewy tannins, and a prolonged finish. #baga #portugal #pigs #ungraftedvines #phlloxera #wildvines #oldvines

Here’s mind-blowing proof that Germany can produce sparkling wines that can match high-end prestige cuvee champagnes! The 98-point Weingut Aldinger Sekt Württemberg Brut Nature 2017 by Matthias Aldinger, which is just about to be released, has spectacular aromatic complexity with aromas of yellow apple, dried pear, brioche, grilled baguette, red berries and candied citrus. The mouth-filling creaminess is beautifully balanced by the chalky freshness and tingling very fine mousse at the fabulously elegant finish. Old vines outside of the village of Dizy with long cordon arms that are prevelant in #Champagne. Fascinating. Tough year for them so far this year with all the rain. They need hot and dry weather now.
