Two weeks ago, the Institute of Transportation Engineers - UCLA participated in the American Indian Science and Engineering Society's (AISES) Annual Youth Motivation Day. We had the opportunity to teach and introduce students to Transportation Engineering and Planning. The Community Service Team created two fun and interactive activities to engage students and encourage them to pursue STEM careers. One of our activities was simulating traffic through a signalized intersection and a roundabout, with the students acting as the drivers. The simulation allowed them to experience firsthand the differences between these two types of intersections and understand the principles behind traffic flow and safety measures. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students as they explored the world of Transportation Engineering. We were honored to play a role in promoting diversity and inclusion in the STEM field. Lastly, this event wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and dedication of my Co-Chair, Daniel O'Malley, and our interns, Orisha Lamon and Alessandro Procaccino. We have a long-overdue post-SLS summary to share! . . . SLS 2024 was incredible from our early morning bus ride to Van Nuys all the way to the last speech! We had a great time participating, networking, and learning! Thank you to our sponsors and @tgifucla for making this trip possible for our big group of students! We were able to leverage UCLA's Green Initiative Fund to purchase Amtrak fare for all attendees, showing that a car-free student conference is possible (at least, until a record-breaking storm event happens and return-trip trains get cancelled). Still, ask us for our carbon reduction calculations 😎 cause you better believe that we crunched those numbers 📉. Thank you to all ITE chapters for making this SLS unforgettable - ESPECIALLY the great team at Cal Poly SLO ITE! 💛🚞 We look forward to catching up with everyone again in Sacramento this summer, for ITE Western District Annual Meeting!
