City Leadership approved Winston-Salem’s updated Language Access Plan in July 2024. Staff input, community feedback, and further data analysis informed the City plan to coordinate the translation of all vital documents into Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL). The plan also responds to growing and recently arrived refugee populations by translating emergency messages into an additional 7 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Farsi, Karenni, Pashto, and Swahili). The plan was developed together with World Relief Triad as part of BIC’s Local Government Language Access Collaborative. World Relief will continue working with the City to identify and provide support to interpreters and translators. After participating in BIC's 2023 Language Access Collaborative, Marimer McKenzie will serve as New Hanover County's first Language Access Coordinator. On Tuesday, June 18th, the Marion City Council unanimously approved a Language Access Plan. The Language Access Plan outlines how the Town will interact with community members who speak languages other than English, about 20% of the Town's population. Over the past year, staff from the City of Marion and Centro Unido Latino Americano participated in monthly workshops with the Building Integrated Communities team to develop the Language Access Plan. UNC Research highlights the work of former chair of the music department and researcher for the UNC Latina/o Studies program and the Institute for the Study of the Americas, David Garcia. In this interview, Garcia discusses his initial move to North Carolina and the UNC community via the Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity. Throughout his time here at UNC-Chapel Hill, Garcia served in several roles ranging from assistant to chair of the Department of Music. Garcia’s research centers on Cuban and Latin popular music, the Black diaspora of the Americas, 19th-century history of Latina/o/s music, dance, and culture, and so much more. The City of High Point’s leadership formally approved its first city-wide Language Access Plan. Starting with Spanish and Urdu, the City will be working towards providing meaningful access to city services for community members who speak languages other than English. Additionally, the City will begin providing language access training for staff and will offer a pay stipend to bilingual or multilingual staff who are qualified to provide interpretation or translation. The plan was developed together with YWCA High Point’s Latino Family Center as part of BIC’s 2023-2024 Local Government Language Access Collaborative cohort. Los líderes de la Ciudad de High Point aprobaron formalmente su primer Plan de Acceso Lingüístico para toda la ciudad. On May 21, City leadership approved a comprehensive Language Access Plan for the City of Concord with the goal of: improving services offered to members of the public with limited English proficiency, increasing their civic engagement, and encouraging a sense of community belonging. The plan, which stresses an initial focus on Spanish, Hindi, and ASL, was developed together with El Puente Hispano as part of BIC’s 2023-2024 Local Government Language Access Collaborative cohort. Last week, Brianna Gilmore attended the Communities Joined In Action Conference alongside several Building Integrated Communities and Language Access Collaborative partners. Partners presented on their innovative immigration integration structures between community and local government including Language Access Plans, Immigrant Advisory Boards, and multilingual digital literacy workshops and government resource information sessions. Through interactive activities and group discussions, partners connected with leaders across the US working towards increasing community voice and power within their organizations. Lindley Andrews and Anthony Ciano are both seniors graduating this May from UNC with a Latin American Studies Major (LTAM). During their senior year they worked on a capstone project examining the intersection of Latino identity and health outcomes in North Carolina.
