As part of the Iowa Department of Education, our mission is to connect the numerous literacy and adult education courses

About us

Did you know more than 36 million adults struggle with basic literacy, and more than 171,000 adults across Iowa lack high school diplomas. Iowans who lack education or training beyond high school are more likely to be unemployed, working in low-wage jobs, and living in poverty, than those with higher levels of education. That's why our goal at the Iowa Literacy Council is to help every Iowan achieve the literacy skills they need to reach their personal and professional goals. To make that goal a reality, we are here to provide support, advocacy, resources and community connections that enable Iowans to find literacy opportunities near them. Whether you're looking for the nearest literacy programs to improve your reading or you want to join our family of volunteers, we're to make your journey a little easier.
