🌲✨Exploring Tribal Forest: Tule River Tribe 🌳 In August 2021, the Indian Forest Management Assessment Team visited the Tule River Tribe in California for a two-day field visit. The Tule River Tribe visit included focus group sessions and one session on Non-Timber Forest Products. The day-long field tour made several stops including viewing resilient watershed ecosystems as a result of the tribe's resilient forest and stopping to see giant sequoia trees which are culturally significant to the Tule River tribe but are susceptible to stand replacing wildfire events. 🌲 The Tule River tribe in south central California entered into a co-stewardship agreement with the adjacent USDA Forest Service Sequoia National Forest to protect tribal interests and promote cross boundary fuels reduction projects. Tribal forests are a source of life, culture, and tradition. Beyond timber, they provide a wide range of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) that sustain Tribal lifeways—herbaceous plants, fish, wildlife, roots, moss, fungi, tree bark, sap, seeds, and more. 🌾🍄 These resources are harvested not just for food and medicine, but also for ceremonies, cultural traditions, and maintaining deep connection to the land. 🌿🪶 Yet, these invaluable resources face threats: reduced access, declining populations, and loss of traditions around gathering and processing. For many Tribes, NTFPs are at the heart of their forests and essential to their identity. 🌱 📢 Explore more tribal forest management in the IFMAT IV StoryMap, 'Breaking Point: The State of Tribal Forestry Today.' 📢 New blog post!📢 🌲Jim Durglo, a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the Fire Technical Specialist for the Intertribal Timber Council (ITC), shares how cultural burning can shape the future of sustainable forest management. 🔥 Cultural burning, an Indigenous practice of controlled, low-intensity fires, is more than just a method for maintaining forest health — it’s also a crucial step toward building resilience against climate change and catastrophic wildfires and restoring Indigenous stewardship. 🔗 Check out the full blog to learn more about cultural burning and the future of tribal forestry! https://lnkd.in/gNPhTpqK #TribalForestry #IndigenousKnowledge #ForestManagement #Sustainability #CulturalFire #GoodFire

“We stretch $1 very far to complete projects”- IFMAT IV Focus Group Participant Over the past four decades, IFMAT reports have shown there is significant inequity in funding for tribal forest management compared to other federal agencies. For example, tribally managed lands receive only $0.40 for every dollar of funding that National Forest Service land receives! An annual increase of $96 million is needed to reach per-acre parity with National Forest and Bureau of Land Management funding. We need funding parity now!
