Happy #NationalInventorsMonth! Let’s celebrate sun worshipper and Swiss chemist Franz Greiter, who invented the first zinc oxide sunscreen. The intrepid mountaineer developed his mix of zinc oxide and petroleum jelly to prevent sunburns. He turned his practical creation into the product Gletscher Crème (Glacier Cream) under the brand Piz Buin for the mountain where he was sunburned. Today in #NationalInventorsMonth, we pay tribute the New Jersey Zinc Company, which developed the popular Zamak alloys for die casting in 1929. ZAMAK gets its name from the German words zink, aluminium, magnesium, and kupfer (copper) that comprise the alloy family. Each Zamak alloy – 3 and 5 for die casting and 2 and 7 for spin casting – contains 4% aluminum. #zinc #ZincForTheFuture #diecast #alloy #zamak

Today in #NationalInventorsMonth, we celebrate another French scientist, Jules Raulin, who studied under Louis Pasteur and discovered zinc’s role in microorganism growth in 1869. Sadly, it took 57 years for scientists to note that zinc helped plants grow in 1926 (Fertilizer, anyone?), followed by rat growth in 1934, poultry growth in 1958, and finally – ding, ding, ding – human growth in the early 1960s, leading the U.S. National Academy of Sciences to develop a Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for zinc in 1974. Two more fun facts: 95% of rolled zinc is recycled, and in Europe and North America, 95% of Electric arc furnace (EAF) dust is recycled - the global zinc industry continues to be proactive in circularity. #zinc #ZincForTheFuture #recycling #circularity
Zinc's inherent recyclability makes it an important commodity in the circular economy. 👉 Did you know that 60% of the world's zinc production is used in galvanising to protect steel from corrosion? 👉 And did you know that much of the world's refined zinc finds its way back to reuse through direct recycling or other recycling routes? ♻ One example is the recovery of zinc oxides when end-of-life galvanised steel is recycled. These recovered 'raw materials' are an important part of the feedstock for Nyrstar's zinc production, where we convert them back into shiny zinc ready for reuse. ♻ Now, the recycling of galvanised steel is very CO2 intensive and, until recently, part of this footprint was attributed to zinc smelters. Working with the International Zinc Association (IZA), this footprint has recently been reallocated to steel production. This encourages companies like Nyrstar to recycle zinc and maintain a low carbon footprint, thus future-proofing the sustainability of the zinc industry. 🌎 The new approach is compliant with ISO norms and the GHG Protocol Standard for product carbon footprints and has been agreed with the World Steel Association (worldsteel). It is included in the peer reviewed IZA Carbon Footprint Guidance 2.0, which has been approved by the London Metal Exchange for LME passport reporting. Read more here https://lnkd.in/gGfN4GTs

While the Olympics are still going strong in Paris let’s highlight the foresight used when zinc sheet was chosen to cover the roofs of the city during the rebuilding efforts in the 19th century. Zinc is exceptionally durable, visually attractive, long-lasting, and fully recyclable at the end of its service life.
