This article by Peter Swan, Ph.D, the incoming Chief Architect of the International Space Elevator Consortium, discusses the objectives and responsibilities of his new role. - What will best focus our research and move towards a robust future with Space Elevators ? - How should ISEC investigate the direction that should be taken, leading to recommendations for Engineering Design teams ?

About us
ISEC focuses on the global communication of the concept of space elevators. We believe that the Earth Space Elevator is ready for Engineering Development, facilitated by the rapid ongoing development of the candidate material (single crystal graphene) for the construction of a 100,000 km tether. The mission statement : "ISEC promotes the development, construction and operation of a space elevator as a revolutionary and efficient way to space for all humanity" Our vision: "Space Elevators are the Green Road to Space while they enable humanity's most important missions by moving massive tonnage to GEO and beyond. They accomplish this safely, routinely, inexpensively, and daily; they are environmentally neutral" ISEC's plan of action is based upon yearly themes and studies, with an annual Conference. The latest study addresses the Tether/Climber Interface, published earlier in 2023 : see the website for details of all other studies. Note : we have no connection with companies calling themselves 'Space Elevator' or 'Space Elevator Foundation' on LinkedIn.

The text below will be the July-2024 "President's Corner" newsletter article from Dennis Wright, new President of International Space Elevator Consortium. ============== This is my first newsletter article as President of ISEC. I am succeeding Peter Swan, Ph.D, who held that post for eleven years. In that time, Pete was the driving force in the International Space Elevator Consortium. Thanks, Pete, for your energy and leadership. We wish you well in your new Space Elevator Development Company. Perhaps a few words about me are in order, and then, on to business. I’ve been an ISEC member since 2013 and served for several years as its Vice President. My background is in high energy and nuclear physics, having developed and participated in experiments at Los Alamos, the TRIUMF accelerator in Vancouver, Canada, the Stanford Linear Accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and in the SuperCDMS dark matter search in Soudan, Minnesota. I retired from Stanford in 2020 and began to spend time studying the more challenging aspects of developing the space elevator. This has convinced me that space elevators are physically sound, feasible and should be developed as soon as possible. I hope that you, as newsletter readers who may have read some of the ISEC studies, are convinced of that, too. This brings me to my main topic. ISEC runs on volunteers. These are the people who are bringing the space elevator closer to reality by engaging in studies, developing space elevator materials in the lab and disseminating space elevator knowledge. They range from high school students to active and retired professionals. They have helped ISEC become the world’s leading space elevator organization. I’m asking each of you to consider becoming a part of this work. No matter what your skill level or area, there is valuable work for you to do. Are you an engineer, scientist, software developer, educator, graphic artist or writer? There’s a place for you and we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to contact me at [email protected]. A great way to dip your toe in and see what we’re all about is to attend our annual ISEC conference in Chicago, September 7th and 8th. We’ll have workshops and presentations on various space elevator topics. Do you a have an idea or concept you have worked on and would like to present? We still have a few slots available, so please submit your abstract to the above e-mail address for consideration by July 10th. Any science fiction fans out there? We’ll also have a special session chaired by science fiction author Douglas Phillips on how scientists and engineers can work with science fiction authors. This post by Dr Mark A. Garlick isn't directly related to International Space Elevator Consortium, but it shows what might be built in the future after the lift capacity of the #SpaceElevator energises the space economy and enables the construction of massive space structures... https://lnkd.in/emDX9HWX

Sound ON! In case you have not seen my O'Neill colony animation in full, please don't miss this! Rendered in #blender3d As usual. And PLEASE REPOST!

Following the 2024 #SpaceElevator Conference Call for Papers we have accepted abstracts from across the US, from the UK and from Japan. We are compiling the Conference Schedule now and find that we have space for one or two more speakers : we have therefore extended the abstract deadline until July 10th, but submit your proposal as soon as possible for a chance to present. 'View Event' below for full details on how to submit your abstract, or go direct to https://lnkd.in/eRSGhciC . Follow the same link to register to attend the ONLY worldwide conference dedicated to Space Elevators.
CALL FOR PAPERS : the 2024 International Space Elevator Consortium conference venue and dates are confirmed and abstracts are invited. This is the ONLY conference worldwide entirely dedicated to #SpaceElevator concepts and technologies. If you would like to speak you must submit an abstract, 'View Event' below for details. Registration is open : this is an in-person event only. Here at International Space Elevator Consortium we believe we are aware of the latest worldwide #SpaceElevator developments, but we are puzzled by the spate of news stories in recent days saying that 'Japan is building a Space Elevator in 2050'. These articles appear to all be based on the Obayashi Corporation announcement in 2012, and we're not aware of any recent update. Do any of our followers know why these multiple articles are being published now ? Please comment if you have any ideas !! We agree that Earth Space Elevators are likely to be built by 2050, possibly much sooner : one may well be built by Obayashi, but there are other teams worldwide. As always, our website www.isec.org has all the latest news and publications.
