An exciting new partnership between the US Biochar Initiative and the US Composting Council aims to enhance #soil health, water quality and sustainability through the combined use of #compost and #biochar! 🌱🎊 In the 2023 Global Biochar Market report, one of the main needs reported by biochar industry professionals was to create significant development in biochar end markets. Did you know that the first use of biochar dates back over 2000 years ago? 👇 Native Amazonian groups smoldered organic material to produce this black gold, which supported beneficial micro-organisms and made the soil richer and more stable. This highly fertile topsoil supported their agricultural needs as populations grew. Now, a couple thousand years later, we are still using this natural technology – and continuing to learn more about it. As you probably know, biochar is incredible for a number of reasons: 🌱 It boosts soil fertility 🌑 It is a carbon sequestration tool 🐄 Its production can deal with waste feedstock and provide green energy 💧 It filters water What’s more exciting? New uses are being discovered constantly! This is due to the fact that both biochar’s physical and chemical properties can be manipulated for different results... [The image shows two different microscopic pore structures of biochar]. For example: 💧 biochar with higher porosity is more useful for water filtration and purification 🌾 biochar with high water holding capacity is more suitable for agriculture in low water environments ⬆️ biochar with high porosity AND high pH can be used for improving microbial health in soils ✅ And obviously, biochar with a high fixed carbon content is best for low carbon building and creating carbon sinks We’re still learning about the many exciting uses of biochar being developed and deployed across a range of industries.
