Our mission is to honor the untold stories of the African American journey at one of our country’s most sacred sites.

About us

The International African American Museum is about a journey that began centuries ago in Africa, and still continues. It is about the journey of millions of Africans, captured and forced across the Atlantic in the grueling and inhumane Middle Passage, who arrived at Gadsden’s Wharf in Charleston, South Carolina, and other ports in the Atlantic World. Their labor, resistance, and ingenuity, and that of their descendants shaped every aspect of our world.

  • Throwing it back to the Harlem Renaissance, Zora Neale Hurston wasn't just living in the moment; she was creating the future. An anthropologist, playwright, and author, Hurston was the voice that refused to echo others, choosing instead to sing a solo of cultural celebration. With works like 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' and the groundbreaking 'Barracoon,' she didn't just write novels; she crafted a mirror reflecting the complexity and beauty of African American life. Her work, dismissed by many contemporaries, now stands as a testament to her visionary spirit. This #WomensHistoryMonth, let's honor the legacy of Zora Neale Hurston and the countless African American women whose creativity and resilience have paved the way for new generations. Dive deeper into the impactful stories of African American women like Zora Neale Hurston. Plan your visit today: https://bit.ly/4bHlCKB #ZoraNealeHurston
