Thrilled to share that our paper "TwiNet: Connecting Real World Networks to their Digital Twins Through a Live Bidirectional Link" has been accepted at IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM) 2024. In this work, we introduce TwiNet, a pioneering solution for integrating real-world wireless spectrum environments with their Digital Twin counterparts through a bidirectional, near-realtime link. Leveraging the MQTT protocol, TwiNet enables data transfer at an average latency of 14 ms, making it ideal for real-time communication and network optimization. Our evaluations demonstrate TwiNet's effectiveness in two scenarios: (i) enhancing Safe Adaptive Data Rate (SADR) systems by assessing and improving network configurations, yielding a 15% performance boost, and (ii) rapid deployment of CNNs to counteract jamming, achieving up to 97% accuracy and model deployment in as little as 2 minutes. TwiNet represents a significant leap in responsive and adaptive Digital Twin applications, addressing key challenges in modern wireless communication. Very happy to see how O-RAN is further advancing RAN intelligence and intelligent control at the F2F meeting in Montreal! The Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things (WIoT) at Northeastern University joined the meeting with some activities: - We demoed how Colosseum (colosseum.net) can be used as the Open RAN digital twin, to develop AI/ML applications for intelligent closed-loop control of the RAN. We also supported a demo from the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance showing slicing capabilities on the OAI softUE! On September 26, 2024, I had the pleasure of visiting Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, and delivering a talk titled "free5GC: Free the Next-Generation Core Networks." Core networks are typically expensive, and access to their source code is often restricted, making it challenging for researchers to conduct real-world experiments. With free5GC, we're changing the game. Researchers can now implement and test their algorithms on a real testbed instead of relying solely on simulations. The fact that free5GC can be run on a laptop makes it an affordable, open, resilient, and secure solution. Since the software is decoupled from the hardware, users can choose their hardware based on performance requirements. What's more, emerging technologies like Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) are part of free5GC's roadmap. Their presentations on resilient computing and communications in 6G mobile systems, machine learning on edge networks, and 5G evaluation in real-world environments were fantastic. Their cutting-edge research spans ground, air, and space communications and tackles challenges like radio frequency interference at sub-THz frequencies. The demos they showcased were equally impressive! We had insightful discussions with Tommaso Melodia, Edmund Yeh, Josep Miquel Jornet, Francesco Restuccia, Stratis Ioannidis, Dimitrios Koutsonikolas, Paolo Testolina, Pedram Johari, Maxime Elkael, Reshma Prasad. I look forward to seeing how the Institute's research will continue to shape the future of wireless communications. Colosseum, the world’s largest radio frequency emulator and open testbed, has announced the integration of support for the deployment of the SLICES-RI Beyond 5G blueprint. This development was demonstrated at the recent National Science Foundation (NSF) MERIF workshop, highlighting the blueprint capabilities and the collaborative efforts behind this initiative. SLICES-RI is designed as a scientific instrument under the umbrella of ESFRI - European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures. SLICES-RI blueprint, intends to facilitate advanced research in future network and communication infrastructures by providing a structured approach to deploying and managing experimental network environments. By integrating this blueprint into Colosseum’s framework, users can now leverage Colosseum’s advanced emulation capabilities to implement and evaluate the SLICES-RI architecture in a controlled, realistic environment. This integration represents a significant step in aligning international research efforts and fostering interoperability across testbed platforms. Colosseum, as an open testbed, continues to cater to a diverse range of research communities by supporting the deployment of standardized frameworks and blueprints. This collaboration underscores Colosseum’s and SLICES-RI's commitments to advancing experimentation in next-generation wireless networks and radio frequency systems, ensuring that researchers from academia, industry, and government can efficiently utilize these testbed’s unique capabilities. The Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things (WIoT) is excited to announce a new partnership between Northeastern University and EURECOM! This new partnership will facilitate student and faculty mobility among the two organizations and shared knowledge, with research collaboration in the area of future networks and a path toward a double-degree program. This agreement further solidifies the strong research collaboration between Northeastern University's Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things (WIoT) and EURECOM, focusing on 6G, cybersecurity, open radio access networks, and open-source software for wireless research. Northeastern has been a steadfast advocate of OpenAirInterface Software Alliance (OAI), the open-source 5G networking technology initiated by EURECOM, and its use in U.S. research projects. This agreement will deepen our research collaboration and create a pathway to extend it to the educational domain.
