Victory! 🎉🎉🎉 Today, a Michigan court heard oral arguments on a motion for summary disposition to dismiss Peter and Annica Quakenbush's challenge of Brooks Township's ban on new cemeteries. In a stunning turn of events, the Court not only denied the motion but ruled that the township’s ban on new cemeteries was unconstitutional. “This victory recognizes Peter and Annica’s constitutional right to start a business. The township can’t just ban a necessity of life like a cemetery,” said IJ Attorney Katrin Marquez. “People won’t stop dying just because the township doesn’t want them buried there.” https://iam.ij.org/474rsUF

#Homelessness is a difficult issue to address. But the city of Tempe’s ongoing fight with the homeless charity AZ Hugs is an example of picking the absolute worst option for tackling the issue: Criminalizing charity.

🚨 NEW CASE ALERT 🚨 Today IJ filed a lawsuit challenging a newly enacted Florida law that bans the production, distribution, and sale of cultivated meat. If some Floridians don’t like the idea of cultivated chicken, there’s a simple solution: Don’t eat it. https://lnkd.in/e6z29Bcz

Florida, you’ve been SERVED. Today, the Institute for Justice — a nonprofit, public interest law firm — filed our lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the July 1 Florida law that bans the production, distribution, and sale of cultivated meat. We’ve always thought it was clucked up that Florida’s politicians want to choose what you eat. We disagree. What you eat should be your choice – not something determined by special interests. UPSIDE’s cultivated chicken has been deemed safe by the FDA and USDA. We should trust their judgment more than inexperienced and uninformed politicians. So we: 📣 Started a petition against the ban 🤝 Worked behind the scenes to push back before the law went into effect 🌴 Held an event to give Floridians a chance to try cultivated meat But that wasn’t enough for us. This lawsuit is the next step, because we all have the right to choose what we eat. 💪 #UPSIDEFoods #FreedomofFood #InnovationNotRegulation

IJ has filed amicus briefs in 2 civil rights cases out of Louisiana asking the #SupremeCourt to make clear that the state’s short statute of limitations in #CivilRights cases is out of step with federal law. “Louisiana has essentially made it impossible for victims of government abuse to bring constitutional claims against their abusers, by making the window for bringing these claims so narrow. It often takes months just to develop a case and establish the basic facts, and this has only been made worse by the creation of procedural barriers, such as #QualifiedImmunity, which requires even more work prior to filing a lawsuit.” —IJ Attorney Katrin Marquez

VICTORY: Last night the Nazareth, Pennsylvania Borough Council voted to repeal its ban on “for sale” signs on cars that are legally parked on the street. This comes less than 5 months after Nazareth resident Will Cramer, represented by IJ, filed a federal #1stAmendment lawsuit challenging the ban. https://lnkd.in/ecrXcHTa
