Meet Mike Smith, DWD CFO, a local hire from afar. Mike Smith was named Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) in April 2023. Prior to that time, he spent almost eight years serving as CFO with the State of Oregon Employment Department. The Indiana native, who has lived in six different states (some more than once) and was born in the same Beech Grove hospital as his father, is excited about coming “home” to a place where he can invest in and support Hoosiers. “I haven’t lived in Indiana since the first grade, but I have a lot of connections here,” he said. “My Aunt Velma owned and operated what is now called Pleasant View Orchard in Fairland; I have uncles who were a big part of football and basketball at Franklin Central High School; and I’m a descendent of the founders of the town of Wanamaker.” READ: https://lnkd.in/gtBMeEXZ #DWD #Indiana #Workforce

Are you joining in the fun with the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration? This week one of our very own was highlighted as festivities began. DWD Chief Unemployment Insurance Officer Noah Shelton was recently honored as the Indiana Civil Rights Commission’s (ICRC) 2024 Next Level Leadership Award recipient. Presented at the Governor’s Reception during Indiana Black Expo’s Summer Celebration June 25, 2024, the award was presented to Shelton in recognition of his impact, initiative and community service as a publicly recognized up-and-coming leader. In all, Shelton, who didn’t even know he had been nominated, was one of five African American Hoosiers, along with an ICRC employee, to be honored during the ceremony for exceptional efforts across diverse fields that include education, entrepreneurship, and community leadership. “I had no clue (about the nomination),” he said. “I was traveling and received a phone call. It was such a humbling moment.” Read: https://lnkd.in/g3CXRsFX
