To raise the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the highest level.

About us

The Indian Health Service, an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services , works to ensure that all American Indian and Alaska Native people receive comprehensive health care services and all Indian health facilities are staffed with well-trained, compassionate, committed health care professionals. IHS offers extraordinary career opportunities that provide comprehensive, patient-centered care in a variety of disciplines and health care facility settings. An Indian health career offers dedicated practitioners a chance to live and work within Native communities, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the heritage of the Tribe, discover the traditions that have been handed down for generations and gain cultural insight into Native beliefs and values. IHS is hiring physicians, pharmacists, dentists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, behavioral health providers and other health professionals. We offer a choice of three options for health professionals to practice their specific discipline: working as a federal civil service employee, as an Officer in the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service (USPHS) or directly for a Tribal or Urban Indian program. Each career option offers career flexibility, competitive salaries and benefits and ample opportunity for advancement. Applicants must be US citizens. IHS also provides for the education, recruitment and retention of health care professionals through the IHS Scholarship Program, the IHS Extern Program and the IHS Loan Repayment Program. IHS has openings available nationwide right now. The policy of the IHS is to provide absolute preference to qualified Indian applicants and employees who are suitable for federal employment in filling vacancies within the IHS. IHS is an equal opportunity employer. Privacy Policy: https://www.ihs.gov/privacypolicy/

Discover what makes PATH EHR different with the Health IT Modernization Program! The program is building PATH EHR with “Patients at the Heart” by focusing on interoperability. Interoperability is the ability of different health data systems to share data securely and efficiently, allowing health care providers to access a patient's medical information regardless of where the patient has received care. It is a priority of the Health IT Modernization Program that PATH EHR is being built to work across not only specialties, but also health care facilities across Indian Country for more efficient and streamlined care. For more information on the Health IT Modernization Program, visit ihs.gov/hit or scan the QR code. #ModernizeHealth #HealthITModernization #NativeHealth #IndianCountry

Finding support throughout the recovery process is a key factor in one’s success. Peer support workers are those with lived experiences who have achieved and maintained success in recovery. Their experiences allow them to offer support and encouragement to those entering recovery. Recovery is a beautiful thing and IHS celebrates those who have embarked on this journey. We also acknowledge that recovery can be a scary time full of questions and uncertainty. If you or a loved one is experiencing alcohol or substance misuse, here are some tips to help. Talk about it – Talk to someone you trust about your concerns and offer or ask for help and support. Listen and be kind – Open communication is important. Listen without being judgmental while also showing empathy and understanding. Learn about the different options for treatment – Connect with a behavioral health professional to learn about treatment options and choose a path that is right for you: https://lnkd.in/ecmGqbpX #NativeHealth #IndianCountry

During Suicide Prevention Month, IHS has reinvigorated our commitment to promoting mental health and wellbeing. The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us that we need to place a greater focus on our providers and how to support them in building greater resilience and making time for mental wellness. In partnership with Crisis Text Line, IHS presented a webinar on September 19 on "Provider Burnout in Tribal Communities." Crisis Text Line’s Chief Health Officer Dr. Shairi Turner, MD, MPH, shared insights on the impacts of adverse child experience, the increased risk of suicide faced by providers, and how #CrisisTextLine offers Native texters support from crisis counselors by texting NATIVE to 741741. Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7, high quality text-based mental health support and crisis intervention with live, trained volunteers to support people in moments of need: https://lnkd.in/eG5a5M7

The IHS has initiated tribal consultation to seek recommendations on funding methodologies for the payment of eligible Contract Support Costs incurred by tribes and tribal organizations related to expenditures of program income, also known as third-party reimbursements. We are requesting input from all tribal leaders, as the implementation of a modified methodology to negotiate and pay CSC on expenditures of program income can have broad budgetary implications for tribes that receive direct services, as well as compacting and contracting tribes. We will convene three in-person and two virtual tribal consultation sessions in September and October to allow multiple opportunities to provide feedback, with the first virtual session held tomorrow. For more information and details about each session, visit https://bit.ly/3zikSND. The deadline for transmitting written comments is October 11, 2024. Comments can be sent to [email protected] using the subject line: CSC Methodology for Program Income. #NativeHealth #IndianCountry
