We're excited to get started serving Braun Ambulances in Van Wert OH, the premier manufacturer of ambulances in the US! We'll be partnering with Braun to build custom, internal databases and software that will enable their service and sales teams. And since several of us have nurse spouses, and Brian's a former EMT, this one hits close to home. :) If you're a manufacturing company that needs a fresh set of eyes on tech, we'd love to chat! Let's build something great together. #softwareengineering #databases #manufacturing #customsoftware

Had a great time diving into practical use cases of newer AI models/tools in Indy! It was a small conference thrown at the Dallara IndyCar Factory by Tensure, Product Forge, and Google. Thanks for the invite Luke Dooley! So many new ideas... Brian Rowe Angie Carel

Sitting at a fire being quiet when I get a message from Brett Meyer about the NL platform being ready for new languages. I am humbled and stoked for our neighbors who have yet to utilize the platform because English isn’t their native tongue. (More to come - but this is amazing!) Goal is to keep finding ways to make the NL platform easier to use, so that neighbors in need and neighbors who wants to help can have a low barrier to entry. Praise the Lord and thank you my friend, brother and co-laborer… and to the Impact Upgrade Team, specifically Brian Rowe!

Hey everybody, I have a favor to ask. Check out this article about a federal tax law update (Section 174) that was included in the Trump administration's tax package from 2017 as a way to pay for the corporate/wealthy tax cuts. Most believed it was so irrational that it would never actually be enforced, but Congress failed to do anything about it and 2022/2023 is when it finally kicked in. Only this month are companies starting to find out about it and are getting obliterated by huge tax bills. [Overview article is in the comments.] The gist of it: A company's software development while building products used to be a standard business expense, year to year. For the sake of easy math... Say we spend $500k on development in 2023, and made $600k revenue, our taxable profit would only be $100k. But under Section 174, software development has been classified as an R&D activity that must be amortized over 5 years: 10% the first year, 20% in years 2-5, and the final 10% in year 6. What that would mean: instead of the $500k expense in one year, that would be broken up. In the first year, only $50k of expenses could be written off. So our taxable profit would incorrectly look like $550k and our tax bill would jump sky high. Amortization and depreciating assets is nothing new in accounting, but applying software development to the same arena is pure insanity. It hurts ANY company doing any sort of internal development. But worse, it unfairly targets newer, bootstrapped, sustainable, did-things-the-right-way small companies like ours. We've been talking to quite a few businesses, accountants, attorneys, etc. and this is FINALLY starting to have increased noise... There are at least a couple of bills that are being argued right now. One (the most ideal) repeals this change retroactively, for good. The other (less ideal) defers a decision again until 2026, and 2022-2025 would revert back to previous laws -- obviously helpful, but still an issue again in the future. The bills supposedly have bipartisan support (and at least one has cleared either a committee or a House vote), but nothing is for sure yet. [A link with a tool to help with contacting them is in the comments.] Consider emailing, calling, or messaging on social media your federal representatives and senators? Not just for us, but because of the widespread implications to companies in practically every industry? We're already seeing layoffs happen as a result, a few partner companies are concerned about shutting down entirely, etc. We're ok in that we have cash reserves to cover it, but we could certainly make more impact in the world if we didn't have to worry about being taxed up to our eyeballs if we chose to invest in new tech... Thank you!

Tech should enable you to be a better human with real relationships. But we sometimes see businesses and nonprofits attempting to automate away the need for real communication. It's a balancing act! Tech for humans, not humans for tech. It should augment the real you, especially when you're interacting with those you serve. What does that look like in your organization?
