"She's treated like a real child here, like family, as if she were a child who could walk or talk. I was so surprised by it, I thought, 'Wow, how beautiful is that?' In my country they don't treat children with disabilities like they do here. There weren't schools or hospitals that could help her. I always think, "What would our life be like if we had to go back?" Juan's journey to seek asylum and medical interventions for his child living with cerebral palsy is an act of love and dedication. Our fight to win their asylum case continues but thankfully Lesly received the medicine and surgery she needed in the U.S. She is doing better than ever. When politicians create restrictive immigration policies, people like Juan and Lesly suffer. Nobody deserves a door shut in their face or to be left alone in a complicated immigration system. We must #WelcomeWithDignity for people of all abilities as they seek safety, family reunification, and due process with a lawyer by their side. #DisabilityPrideMonth #Inclusivity #Accessibility #immigration #legaladvocate #immigrationlawyer #cerebralpalsy #dedicatedfather #Dad #SpecialNeeds

In the heart of Central California lies the Mesa Verde ICE detention center where our client Juan and others remain detained far from their loved ones. Juan has been detained since February and is a Marine Corps veteran. He spoke to KPFA Radio about the labor strike to bring awareness about the exploitative labor practices, poor living conditions, and mistreatment by GEO. He chose to advocate against these injustices he and others face, despite the risk of retaliation, to call for shutting down the for-profit immigration jail for good. We join Juan in the calls to end abusive treatment of immigrants in for-profit immigration jails.

Today we joined 61 organizations in calling on Senate Approps leaders to reject House cuts to critical humanitarian aid & development assistance accounts. US leadership must help prevent international crises & human suffering & protect people & the planet. We urge the Senate SFOPs Subcommittee to support robust investment in programs that protect human rights and dignity, alleviate suffering, strengthen peace, and reflect our nation’s values and global leadership. At ImmDef, we provide free legal representation for children so they have a fighting chance in immigration court with an advocate by their side. We are happy to share that ImmDef Staff Attorney, Devika, has won Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) orders for her teenage client. Now reunited with her uncle, she has a pathway to legal status. While she heals from her past, she can now find relief by letting go of the fear of deportation and grow her roots in her new home. We share her story on the anniversary of Emma Lazarus' birthday. Emma came from a Jewish refugee family and wrote "The New Colossus" in 1883. In 1903 it was cast in bronze and mounted at the base of the Statue of Liberty. It's a reminder of how integral immigration is to the American story and of our moral and legal obligations to protect refugees and asylum seekers. "Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. “Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” - Emma Lazarus #SuccessStory #NoImmigrantStandsAlone #EmmaLazarus #StatueofLiberty #ImmigrationAttorney #SaveAsylum #LegalRepresentation #ImmigrantRights #ImmigrantJustice #ChildAdvocacy

The reality for many asylum seekers: The CBP One app isn’t working for them. They are languishing for months waiting to get a desperately needed appointment. Lindsay Toczylowski, Executive Director Immigrant Defenders Law Center, has heard this directly from people stuck waiting in dangerous conditions in Tijuana, Mexico. #WelcomeWithDignity is calling upon the U.S. government to redirect resources at the border to increase staffing and available appointments now.
