Yesterday, I had the privilege of presenting my poster at the UIS Center for State Policy and Leadership (CSPL) Showcase 2024. This was an incredible opportunity to showcase the vital work the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is doing to inspire and support the next generation of public health professionals, particularly junior and high school students across Illinois. Our presentation addressed key workforce development challenges and emphasized the importance of promoting careers in public health, especially in light of the staffing shortages exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m immensely proud to be part of this initiative, which is focused on strengthening the future of public health in Illinois by connecting students with meaningful career paths. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who stopped by to engage with our poster and learn more about opportunities at IDPH! I also want to extend a special thank you to the Illinois Innocence Project for sharing Brian Beals’ powerful story during the fireside chat with Illnois State Senator Doris Turner and the IIP team, including Stephanie Kamel , the Director of IIP, and Lauren Kaeseberg, the Legal Director. Their discussion on preventing wrongful convictions through groundbreaking legislative initiatives was a poignant reminder of the critical work being done to reform our justice system. Let’s continue to inspire the future of public health together! #CSPLShowcase2024 #GPSI #PublicHealth #IDPH #WorkforceDevelopment #HealthCareers #IllinoisInnocenceProject #JusticeReform #UIS

  • Mental health check-in: Which Moo Deng are you feeling like today? 🤔 Internet starlet baby hippo aside, October is Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, and as we approach the often-stressful holiday season and diminishing amount of sunlight, it's important to check in with how you're feeling. 📈 Nationwide, over 15 million adults experience depression each year, a number that has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic. If you're experiencing depression symptoms, it might be time to get screened. Ask yourself how you're feeling (and leave us a comment using the Moo Deng scale if you want) and take steps to keep your mental health in check. 🧠 📲 Find more resources: https://lnkd.in/g3CWQ-iK

  • Director Vohra and Deputy Chief Operating Officer Ashley Thoele were glad to join our friends with the University of Illinois System at Lincoln Memorial Hospital to highlight our shared dedication to strengthening the state's healthcare workforce! 🏥 💪

Adding well-trained people to the state’s healthcare workforce was the focus as U of I System leaders connected with peers at Logan County’s Lincoln Memorial Hospital. The 25-bed critical-access hospital provides inpatient, outpatient, home health, hospice, behavioral health and primary care services. 🏥 👨⚕️ Talking through challenges and opportunities featured insight from rural health experts from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, part of the University of Illinois Chicago. Its Rural Medical Education Program is just one of the initiatives across the U of I System that helps address patient-care gaps in the state. The U of I System’s universities and UI Health educate and train more medical professionals than any other institution in Illinois, giving learners experience with patients from all walks of life and exposure to the technology and innovation shaping the future of healthcare. State tour conversations and potential next steps align with the system’s mission of advancing health sciences and improving healthcare delivery, both in rural and urban areas.
