For further information, please contact Athmi J. at [email protected] Presentation Synopsis Talk 1:Impact and management of harmonics for larger renewable generators In this presentation, Sean will detail the characteristics and potential impacts, of the harmonic distortion produced by large renewable energy generators. Sean will also describe present approaches to management of harmonic distortion related to large renewable energy generators with reference to Australian Standards and the National Electricity Rules. The presentation will also highlight some of the challenges and limitations that exist in present connection assessment practices. Talk 2 :Certainty in power quality compliance from desktop to evolving reality In this presentation, Mikael will describe how most practical harmonic compliance assessments are currently carried out for grid-scale wind farms, solar farms and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the National Energy Market (NEM), the shortfalls of this method, and then an alternative approach that has the potential to assess compliance on site more accurately, during R2 testing and into the future. The new assessment method (already in use in parts of the NEM) also has the potential to improve the input information for future desktop studies. About Speakers Sean Elphick graduated from the University of Wollongong with a B.E. (elec) in 2002. In 2003, he joined what is now the Australian Power Research Centre at the University of Wollongong, where he is Research Coordinator and Centre Manager. His current role involves business development and technical support for the research and consulting projects that the centre is engaged on. Mikael Kotaniemi is a Power Quality Engineer at Optimised Network Equipment with a B. Eng (Electrical Engineering, Extended Major) from the University of Queensland. He has fourteen years of experience in the areas of power system analysis and design, and almost twelve years of experience in the manufacture and delivery of power quality solutions to clients in the electricity utility, mining, industrial and commercial sectors. We are all so proud when our papers are published in IEEE Power & Energy Society conference proceedings, Transactions, and magazines, and we are happy to share our innovative ideas with colleagues. However, there is another side to the process: reviewing papers. As a member of the PEM editorial board, I have observed how rarely invitations to review a paper are accepted. Most invitees either ignore or reject these invitations. The quality of the papers being published and the timeline depend greatly on the responsiveness and diligence of the reviewers. Recently, the US Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) approved two standard library grid-forming inverter models: REGFM_A1 and REGFM_B1. These models represent two mainstream grid-forming controls used in the industry: Droop Control and Virtual Synchronous Machine Control. As the first generation of WECC-approved GFM models, they have been integrated into commercial simulation tools used by transmission planners worldwide, including Siemens PSS-E, GE Vernova PSLF, PowerWorld Simulator, and Powertech TSAT.
