🗣 IEA Bioenergy’s Technical Coordinator Luc Pelkmans participated in a round table on #biofuels and agriculture, organized by PubAffairs - EU Debates, News & Opinions on 22 May. The highlights of the event are available here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d45Vj-WF
Some of his central messages:
🛫 🚢 Biofuels are one of the primary options for the transition away from fossil fuels in transport. In the coming decades, fleets will still very much rely on fuels, particularly long-haul transport; biofuels can provide an immediate replacement of fossil fuels for those fleets. Overall, the transition in transport should include complementary solutions: electrification, renewable fuels, reducing energy demand and fostering energy efficiency.
🌱Advanced biofuels will be very valuable to support as they open up the feedstock base to different kinds of residues and lignocellulose materials. However, these should not serve to substitute current conventional / crop-based biofuels which comply with sustainability criteria; the primary aim should be to replace more fossil fuels.
❗ Except for innovation support or market entry incentives, the distinction between first-generation and second-generation / advanced biofuels is not really relevant. Biofuels should be evaluated on their performance in terms of greenhouse gas emission savings compared to fossil fuels, as well as potential impacts on biodiversity, (indirect) land use, and food production.
