#Behavioralscience can help more teachers adopt innovative foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) practices. Our latest report describes eight behavioral barriers that can impede teachers from adopting new, evidence-based practices. By understanding the behavioral barriers inhibiting new methods and materials, we can help design FLN programs that address these barriers and test the impact of the designs on teacher behavior. A special thanks to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for supporting this work, and to ARED, Busara, Central Square Foundation, Centre for Social and Behaviour Change, Funda Wande, VVOB, Youth Impact, and Teaching at the Right Level Africa, whose work led to the insights summarized. A non-profit design & consulting firm that uses insights from the behavioral sciences to address complex social problems
About us
ideas42 is a non-profit that uses the insights of behavioral science - which helps us understand the choices and decisions people make - to design innovative solutions to social problems at scale. We do this by carefully dissecting the behavioral issues that prevent otherwise well-designed programs and products from achieving their goals. We then design remedies that use insights from behavioral economics that strive to mitigate or overcome these issues. We work in a number of areas: consumer finance, economic mobility and opportunity, health, education, energy efficiency, and international development. Diversity Statement: As an organization committed to bettering the world through behavioral science, ideas42 seeks to produce the best outcomes for the people touched by our work. We put a high value on hiring people with diverse experiences, backgrounds, and skills because we know that when it comes to solving hard problems with uncertain solutions, heterogeneous teams produce better work. In order to ask the right questions, we must engage in robust debate, empathetic inquiry, and rigorous analysis. These practices depend on a team with a wide array of knowledge, built through both formal training and lived experience. In constructing our team, we look for talented and hard-working people who share our mission and core values, and who can expand the perspectives and skills of the ideas42 team.

With more than 23 million acres of corn and soybeans sown each year, Iowa’s farmers can make a big impact by adopting practices such as #covercropping to improve water and soil health. But even with gains made over the past decade, cover crops are used on just over 7% of farmland in the Midwest. In partnership with Practical Farmers of Iowa, we're applying insights from #behavioralscience to encourage more farmers to adopt sustainable farming methods. #sustainability #sustainablefarming #behavioraldesign

When reflecting on 15 years of applying #behavioralscience to complex social problems, our work to dramatically expand the use of behavioral science as a problem-solving tool is one of our proudest achievements. 𝐀 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫. The BDC has shown that by modeling with nonprofit staff how to ask the right questions—focusing on barriers to desired or intended actions—we can help them formulate appropriate, evidence-informed designs. It is our way of making the power of behavioral science, proven effective in so many contexts, accessible to more problem solvers at the community level.

What began as a pilot project in the Dominican Republic nearly 20 years ago proved so impactful that the model was adapted to three other countries in distinct corners of the world, reaching 13,000 microentrepreneurs and counting. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦—𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠—𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬𝟒𝟐’𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, one that has been replicated and scaled across geographies and populations. It demonstrates that “rule of thumb”–based training can improve business practices and outcomes. ideas42 co-founder and board member 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐚𝐫 reflects on how the training program has evolved, and how this model has influenced ideas42’s approach to real-world problems. Ultimately, this work exemplifies how applied #behavioralscience can materially improve the lives of small business owners and their communities around the world.
