About us
In operation since 1949, Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in energy research, nuclear science and national defense. The world's first usable amount of electricity from nuclear energy was generated here in 1951. At 890 square miles (569,135 acres), the INL Site is roughly 85 percent the size of Rhode Island. In addition to our geographic resources, the lab hosts a variety of unique facilities, including the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. Complementing our nuclear research, the lab has numerous alternative energy and national security programs. Robotics, wind power, high-performance computing, biofuels, critical infrastructure protection, carbon management and advanced vehicle testing are just a few examples of our multifaceted research capabilities. From the creation of innovative nuclear fuel characterization devices to the Visual Benign Reactor as Analog for Nuclear Testing (ViBRANT) and contributions to the MARVEL microreactor project, his inventions and collaborations are helping to shape the future of advanced reactors. A proud member of our Patent Hall of Fame, he holds five patents, with three more on the way - a testament to his relentless creativity and ingenuity. 𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗛𝗢 𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗛 𝗚𝗘𝗧𝗦 𝗙𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗦𝗧 Idaho National Laboratory technologies and projects won more than $7.5 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Technology Commercialization Fund program. The highly competitive program supports the commercialization of DOE national lab plant and site technologies and buildout of the national lab commercialization ecosystem. INL won awards for 11 of its 17 proposals, a 65%-win rate, making it one of the most successful years for projects funded and money awarded.
