Congratulations on gaining your PhD in Civil Engineering, Juan David Tabares. We're grateful to have you on team ICON!
Six months before completing his PhD, Juan was told he’d be jobless and homeless here in the US with crippling debt. He wore this same smile as I watched him and his wife, Maria, endure some of the hardest days of their lives. Juan and I met while he was hustling cycling apparel out of his trunk to pay bills. We started to ride together and he soon became one of my best friends… “mi Parcero,” as he taught me. He’d lecture me on the importance of water conservation and taught me to wash my bike using a spray bottle instead of a hose. Despite constant threats of deportation and rejection, Juan's resilience and contributions to his community far surpassed just about every native-born citizen I know. You never truly know the struggles strong people are experiencing behind their smiles and positivity. I can say with confidence I’m a better man having met Juan. Join me in celebrating Dr. Juan David Tabares for gaining his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Louisville! 👏👏👏 And congratulations to ICON for hiring a man of the highest caliber of character in a crowded talent pool.
